Oil Leak..Rear seal ?

Couple weeks ago while installing a ball joint I noticed a drop of oil on the lowermost bolt of the bell housing. Neddless to say I had my suspicions! Well for the first time since owning my brick there is an oil drip on my driveway!! Yikes!!! Its not coming from the top near my rear mounted distributor and my flame trap is pretty clean for the most part...There is a perforated plastic cover on the lower part of the bell housing and I wonder if removing this would yield anymore clues? Its gotta be pretty involved to replace this seal, removing drive shaft and tranny etc...but with the right jacks and tools what do you fellow bricksters recommend? Approx..shop cost for those of you who have done this ? Thanks

Oil Leak..Rear seal ?

BTW - What model? 240?

The location sounds like a rear main leak, but don't jump to conclusions. Are you sure the valve cover gasket isn't leaking in the rear? What about the tranny cooling lines? If cracked they will leak in the same general location. Eliminate all other possibilities first. Been down this road myself....

The perforated cover accesses the tranny only. If a leak is coming from there it is a transmission leak.

Make sure the intake manifold nipple, the flame trap and all its associated hoses are clean and air flows through them easily. If the hoses/trap are old replace them.

Long story - short version. I thought for sure that my rear main was done about 100K ago. After multiple flame trap/hose cleanings I discovered that the small hose from the flame trap to the intake manifold was indeed clogged. Initially thought it was okay. Moral of the story - spent .60 on a new small hose that probably saved me about $700. Hasn't leaked since - Yahoo!

Oh yeah, the original rear main seal and tranny are still in the car :)

Breather Box

Just thought of this...

As a last resort before replacing the rear main, replace or clean the breather box (cheap) below the flame trap. The breather box if gunked up (like the flame trap) can clog the engine's breather system resulting in increased pressure on your engine's seals.

BTW - How are the front seals doing? What about the area below the flame trap on the block?
