240 tire suggestions 200 1990

Just perused the archives for tire info, nothing up to date so I'm throwing my question out to our Brickhead community.....:)

My car is a 90 244 DL with 185/70-14 tires. I need 2 front tires. Looking for an inexpensive, but good all-round tire that can handle some snow (Southern New England) use. Any suggestions?

After reading Tire Rack reviews (and checking prices!) it looks like the Kumho KR21 and Pirelli P4 4 season are good buys for the money and can handle some snow. I have had both brands on my 240, but not these specific tires. Anybody have any experience with either of these?

Thanks,

Jim

i was on tirerack.com and the first thing i look at is the reviews. I havent gotten them yet but i probably will get the dunlop sp60 . the reviews are great nothing bad about them and that they handle great in the snow. the price is 57.00 a tire i believe. shipping is around 18 for both.

Funny thing, I just mounted four Cooper WeatherMasters 195 70 14. Regular tire dealers were already running out of certain sizes, so I ended up at Fleet Farm!

Cost $63.95 each plus tax and mounting/balancing. These are more aggressive than my old ones and I always put snows on all four corners. I like the 240 to turn in the snow.

The most fun of the year is winter, in the snow. 88/240/47. I always have to go somewhere in the middle of a snowstorm, bread, milk, newspaper, whatever....

On new tires my brick sits about 10 inches off the ground at the sill seam which allows driving over most of the snow. More managable and faster than my pickup in the snow.

I run a set of P4's on my Brick. By no means a snow tire but decent in the winter. Good in the summer.
I run Michelin X-iceII for the winter. They totally rock as a winter tire

I currently have the Kumho 21's from the Tire Rack. I also went up to 195's. It brings my speedometer closer to True speed and the slightly higher gear ratio just might help my MPG.

Ummmm, They are absolutely fine for driving. I will buy another set when the time comes. They are not as good in the snow as you might hope for an ALL Season. I had Continentals on the car last time and Dunlap Axioms before that, they were better in the snow. I have a set of 4 snows (Winterforce) that I swap on the car when the forecast is for snow ( you can't beleive the difference). I live on Long Island so I get less snow then you and I would think twice about using the Kumho's all year round.

I have Khumo Solis on my 1983 GL. They are great tires. I just drove to Spartunberg S.C. and back to N.J. for the Volvo Eurofest. They give a quite and nice ride. P.S. My car won third place.

I can't give you any suggestions, because I only use summer tires and a separate set of snow tires, rather than the all-season tires you're obviously looking for.

But don't forget that, despite your saying that you're looking for "...2 front tires....", please be sure to put the newer pair of tires in the rear. This is not only for 'snow' consideration -- everyone who buys only a pair of new tires should always put the newest tires in the rear, to preserve the safer understeer characteristics of the car.

    Good luck.

I agree with you except that during the winter I use snows on the rear. If I had 4 all-season tires the new ones would go on the rear.

OH, I see you have Snows for the rear. You will be happy with the Kumho's up front then. I did the mounting and balancing of these tires. The treads were very straight and the tires took very little Weights. A sign of a good tire.

Funny how everyone mentioned how they have Rear snows, yet the TireRack wont sell you two snows for the rear only, you must lie and tell them you already have the same snow tires for the front. Liability reasons.

P.S. love those Winterforce Snows that Tirerack sells. After getting around for 18 years with All Season's on my Volvo, I bought rear snows and was so impressed with the driveability difference that I got two more rims and put two more on the front. Huge difference.

I read the feedback on the Firestone Winterforce and it looks like everybody loves them. When they come off your brick, you might want to try to recently introduced Firehawk GT. It looks like they outperform almost every tire in their sizes at less than half the price. Even the TireRack guy that I spoke to said they're a superior performer against many Michelin and Pirellis - he was one of the drivers during the BMW comparison testing.

I have these on my '89 200 sedan. So the 185/70/14's is what I would put on your cars.

They are a very aggressive tire so when you first put them on (all 4) you will notice they wonder a bit. Not scary but I thought I'd mention it. You certainly can keep them on through the whole winter. I do not because I find it easy enough to throw the floor jacks under the car and zip them off and on with the Impact gun. Oh yeah AND because I'm a crazy lunatic (as my wife says). The car looks nicer with the regular tires on it so I change over.
Have you ever driven with Snows on these cars before or do you get through on ALL SEASON tires? The snows are very noticeably better then ALL SEASONS

You mentioned that you feel the car wander a bit when you put on all 4's..I would definitely not likethat feel. I want a solid grasp feel..is it the tire brand or just the fact that the tire is nubby?? did you ever use studs? i never tried that. it probably takes life off the rubber and is super noisy. thanks for input. lynn

These tires can be studded but it is illegal in New York to Stud your tires.

The wander because they are aggressive threaded tires. It's the Winter tire treads not the manufacturer that makes them wander a bit. I have no problem doing 70 MPH on the highways with these tires with clear roads.

I use Pireli P400 or 4000 on the front in the winter and snows in the rear here in northwestern NJ with no problems

Yeah, I use to have P400's and used them with my Dunlop snows. No problem either. Have Kumho's on the front now but they are done. The P4's must be the replacement for the P400's?
