Yesterday evening, about 11:30pm coming home from a family holiday gathering, my wife's '82 242 hit the 300,000 mile mark eight miles from home in the mountains of Colorado. Mark Knopfler's 'The Trowlerman's Song' on the CD player. Good stuff. The car is all original.. paint, mechanicals, no rust, never wrecked. Great car...
The ethical question now... It's always been my belief that personality related items that come with a car should stay with the car... bumper stickers, Dead stickers... and... high mileage badges.
So, I've got a '68 145 that is a parts car. No title, rusted to the hilt, incomplete and basically just trashed. It does run though, and move under its own power. Attached to the rear hatch of said 145 is it's earned old style 300k mile badge. Would it be appropriate in this situation to transfer that badge to my wifes car? Bad karma? Or could I justify it as a sort of passing of the torch.... 'Here's to you kid.. you earned it' type arrangement...?

Only 200k though. Just this afternoon. I vote you should re-cycle the badge. The new ones don't have the same class.

Congratulations!
I say go for it - transfer the badge.
Your wife's car earned it.
I don't think there's any requirement that the 145 has to take it's badge to the grave.
My own car's badge came from a junker.
As did many of the replacement parts on that car.

Recycle it, isn't that what we are doing with these old cars no one wants anymore? Dan

I think the polite thing to do would be to ask the 145 directly if she would agree to donating the badge. What would be unethical would be to add a can of ethanol to the tank, get her all liquored up, so to speak, and then ask. In this instance, I think you could take silence as acquiescence.
Maybe you could fabricate a commemorative marker of some sort to replace the badge on the old girl?

Well, you know my opinion on 240s but as far as ethics are concerned the big deal as I see it,
and my opinion counts to me - beyond that you are pretty much on your own - is that the car it goes on
HAS accumulated the 300,000 miles.
I'd suggest you apply for one in any case. I've heard that they are awarding badges again. If not, not much lost!
You guys keep WARM up there!! S'posed to be in the 60s here tomorrow - made 52 today.

I've have all the badges 100K thru 400K that were on my '86 240 sedan. I currently have the 400K on my car. I gave the 100K to my daughter for her '94 850 that has 125K on it and she will give it to her sister's '98
S70 that has 60K on it right now. They'll all be passed around without any worry of bad mojo. Go for it.....

I'd pass the torch.
To ward off the possibility of 145 ghosts haunting your 242, I'd suggest a brief ceremony involving high-alky content swedish beverage including a drop or two on the hood of the 145.
My spouse likes her 960 so much she wears the mileage badges on the left front fender, just in front of the door, including two badges inherited from our former '85 740 TD. Hmm. thinking about it, not sure about that karma thing, now that I think about the current radiator problem--we forgot the alky when we transferred the badges.

Matt,
Congratulations on the 300K miles! Our 92 245 is sneaking up on it quickly (272K). As for your question about the high mileage badge, the Orrell household is torn. My wife believes the 145 has earned it's badge and should be allowed to keep it, however, it should be removed from the car and saved as a historic relic should the car be sent to the great car crusher in Valhalla.
I on the other hand, see it as a passing the torch from one generation to the next.
My wife's objection is not so much due to an ethical issue, but rather one of superstition... she'd hate to have a 145 haunting her dreams!

man...
this is gonna be a tough decision.
I think I'll have to spend some time with the 145.. put a battery in her; get her thoughts... She will live on mechanically... but...
*torn in decision*

Matt,
Congrats on the 300K mark. Here is my take on the situation.
Firstly, aren't new ones available from Volvo? I think they still are for Benz.
I think your 240 has earned its own badge, and shouldn't have to wear a hand-me-down. Also, you said the 140 has an old style badge. So, if you put it on the 240, it is going to look like it earned it much earlier than it actually did. That would make the badge look somewhat suspect, true or not.
Certainly you should salvage the badge off of the 140 if it were going to the crusher, but it seems inappropriate to award it to another car unless the high mileage badges are no longer available.
One tempering factor might be how many parts from the 140 are currently being worn by your 240.

Yes... you can still *purchase* badges, but they just aren't the same. For one, they don't look as neat. For two, anybody can buy a badge for any mileage... no proof of actual miles accumulated required...
Just not the same...

Interesting that you don't have to prove it. A Benz I had hit the 300K mark and to get the badge you had to have the dealer verify mileage and sign off on the application.

Yes.. that's how it used to be with Volvo...
I guess someone decided that such good advertising wasn't worth the costs involved and that they could make a little cash by selling badges to anyone with $16..
