700 - 900 front cross member interchangeability and replacement ? 900 1994

This weekend I ran over a concrete chunk on a poorly maintained city street. The chunk looks like a piece of square solid concrete column, several inches on a side and about 16 inches long. It was big enough to smash the plastic belly pan and badly bend the lower sections of the front cross member. As the car bounced and slid over the concrete chunk, some other suspension flange surfaces were scraped and bent but the worst damage seems to be at the front cross member. Im thankful that it missed the oil pan, tranny pan, exhaust system, fuel tank and differential housing.

For sure the front cross member has to be replaced. Does anyone know how big a job this is ? I assume the power steering rack has to come out and the engine has to be supported since the front motor mounts are attached to the cross member.

Are 740 (1991 and newer) and 940 front cross members the same ?

Thanks,

Mike

    Hey Mike,

Sorry to hear about your trouble. I agree with Spook and agree you'd be best off with a new crossmember. Give the folks over at Tasca Volvo a call 800-784-5149 or an email (www.tascavolvoparts.com). They are much more reasonable than local dealers and ship to your door. However, I don't know what shipping would cost due to the size and weight of the crossmember.

    Seasons greetings, Jon 'Uncle Olaf'

    Dear Mike91,

May this find You well. Volvo VADIS suggests that this cross-member was used in most 740, 940, and 960 cars, from 1985 until 1998 (those taking the B230F engine and the B6304 engine).

The part numbers are:1378781, which was replaced by 9140852-6, which was replaced by 8250373-1 (this is, I believe, the current number). The price should be about $175-180. You likely will also need part #1330562, which will cost about $60.00.

I would definitely get one direct from Volvo, rather than going to a salvage yard. This is a safety-critical item: it supports the engine and reinforces the body.

    Hope this helps.

    Yours faithfully,

    Spook
