Enough about how to fail emissions, passed with flying colors! 200 1986

Enough about the land of tofu, bean sprouts, and how to fail emissions, here's how to pass it!

Last year passed the low speed Nox by a whopping five points during the 15 mph test and by less that 100 on the 25 mph test. Knew that this year was not going to be a pass unless something was done. Three more stiff test until Inga is a "Classic". Inga is my mostly faithful 245DL Automatic with 245K and the test was in Texas.

Since last year, changed the entire exhaust including the cat. Had a kludge of junk under there, but no leaks. Also replaced the intake and exhaust manifold gaskets, found two of the exhaust under 3 and 4 were almost gone (but not leaking yet). Replaced the plugs and the wires, still have the original O2 sensor as far as I know. Cleaned the heck out of the engine, made sure all the vacuum lines were tight, and added a flame trap relocation kit.

Have the Vacuum line plugged up, did that before last years test. Have the air box thermostat removed, also did that before last years test.

Went down Saturday morning and this time the numbers on the 15mph limit was 1046 and actual of 604. The 25 mph limit was 976 and passed that with a 202! All the other numbers are really good also.

Yeah Baby!

Regards,

Paul

Here's my last emissions report. The car has the original cat, but I keep it in great tune. (scroll down; I tried to get fancy)

Hi Paul,

Last month I treated an 89 to the same array from the same source - manifold back - except I re-used its ratty looking oxygen sensor after baking it in a propane flame. There's probably no direct comparison because the ignition systems in our cars are wildly different, but the end result was I just squeaked by on the NOx in the dyno test Maryland uses on those older cars.

The car was/is destined to be parked at the same commuter lot where my son-in-law lost the cat on an '84 to the battery operated sawzall twirps, so I was somewhat relieved to learn the going scrap price for cats is graded by type - Euro cars getting the high prices, but aftermarket cats next to worthless. Not that the bozos stealing them are attuned to the fine points...

They stole a Catalytic Converter?

I have heard of everything now.

Hope the morons down here don't learn that one.

Regards,

Paul

An original Volvo cat will get you about $120 (well, would 6 months ago) from a recycler, but the aftermarket cat I took off an '86 245 was only worth about $10. This, despite the fact that the receipt that came with the car showed the previous owner paying $300 for it.

Can you imagine how much the cat from, say, a big pickup truck would go for? Cat theives have become a problem in many places.

This is a perfect example of the value of paying attention to basics!
