oil pump pulley? 700 1990

Help!

Okay, we're talking about a 1990 740 GLE, 16-valve, about 290,000 miles. Gave it to my nephew, who has owned and worked on earlier Volvos. He's replacing the timing belts, and he's found pieces of a broken toothed pulley coming from the passenger-side of the engine. Symptoms are that he he had been driving it a little to just to keep it moisture free, and he had to limp back, with little power and a lot of oil smell.

He is pretty sure that it is the oil pump pulley, and he needs the pulley and the bolt. FCP Groton says it is "dealer parts only."

Any suggestions?
1. Is he likely to be right about the part? he hasn't been able to get a look underneath the car, or pull off the lower timing belt cover yet.
2. Any source for these parts other than a Volvo dealer and thus $$$$$$$$$$$?
3.. Does he likely have a need to replace the oil pump?

Thanks,
Brian

Hey Brian,

Hopefully the timing belt didn't slip enough to bend any valves, as these (B234) is an interference engine. You are most likely going to need to get a new oil pump pulley from Volvo. I would check the shaft and see if its damaged. Perhaps a new pump will be necessary. The oil seal may need replacement, as a smell of oil was noted. Also, replace the pulley bolt with one of higher strength, as failure of these bolts has caused failures. For OE parts, check out Tasca Volvo. They charge employee prices, and ship to your door. No sales tax outside MA. You may need to call them at 800-784-5149 as the website does not have much for the older cars. They are very reasonable compared to local dealers. Good luck with the repair.

Best regards and happy holidays, Jon 'Uncle Olaf'
