Ace Hardware Torque Wrench Quality ? 200

The wrench I'm wondering about:

Ace Micrometer Torque Wrench
Pro Series
3/8 inch drive
Range 5 lbs to 80 lbs
PN 2023919
Made in Taiwan

Anyone have any opinions about the quality/reliability/accuracy of this tool?

    my recommendation is

bending beam torque wrench is the least expensive and most accurate, although sometimes hard to use

husky pro from home depot is better than craftsman.

kobalt from lowes is supposedly made by snap-on, and is the best quality other than the real snap-on. it's been discontinued, though.

Just get a beam style one. They're fool proof... which is good, as I am quite the fool! :-)

Find your friendly local Snap On tool truck parked at a garage or Dealership Service Department, and buy yourself a nice accurate torque wrench. It will last a lifetime if you don't use it to drive tent stakes.

You might find a high quality used Snap-On or Mac torque wrench on Craigslist or ebay for a reasonable price. I have been looking for one myself because I'm starting to tackle more advanced projects.

I've heard that the old beam style wrenches are plenty accurate and are much cheaper.

The Beam style wrenches can be accurate, but they would need to be recalibrated to be trustworthy. The best beam wrenches were made by P.A. Sturdevant Co. I still have one of them, but no longer use it, since going to an adjustable Blue Point from Snap-On.

Pretty sure to re-calibrate all you do is bend the needle so it points to 0 when at rest, right? No other calibration needed.

Actually, when you send one back, they adjust the needle to point to a known torque value. It may require some rework of the beam. It is not a cheap operation, but if you don't use them to drive tent stakes they will last a long time.

It can't be any worse than my craftsman. They only guarantee the handle for like 60 days. POS. The local parts store has a nice one for loan.

Those cheap torque wrenches from Ace, Harbor Freight, etc with the knurled metal handle work ok initially but they quickly go out of calibration and aren't particularly linear across their range.

IMO, get at least a Craftsman or the similar wrench at Home Depot, despite the plastic and the short warranty for the Craftsman wrenches they are considerably better in quality when it comes to torquing down a fastener...

If you have to go cheap, get a beam style instead.

From my own personal experience I'd stay away from the Craftsmen torque wrenches. I bought one new, it would click loudly on the first few bolts and then become barely audible. They took it back for service. 3 months later they gave it back to me---with the same exact condition!!! Another 3 month wait and it then worked properly--for a short time--until the ratchet broke a couple of teeth. I do not treat my tools badly. On the other hand I've had one set of Craftsmen metric sockets for 42 years.
