aftermarket accessory bushings 200

Any experiences with them? I need to swap my accessory bushings and replace the twisted, squeeling belts, and I only want to do it once. So are the aftermarket rubber bushings that FCP sells any good? How 'bout the poly accessory bushings - worth it?

    The end all to bushings was the Super-Pro accessory bushing, when people on this side of the ocean stocked them. Hard to find nowadays, but I have been so pleased with the iPD replacements that I order them in bulk. Very good quality. The fact that they are a tiny bit harder to get into position just increases my confidence that they will stay in place. In my opinion they last a lot longer. However the key to making them last will always be not over-tightening the belts.

    I've put Poly's in all the spots .... 200

    I've replaced all the accessory bushings with Poly (blue, from IPD). I can't say they're better in terms of keeping the belts taught, as they're merely what I expect from any new bushings. The reason for choosing them is that I expect them to last a lot longer because they're supposed to be more impervious to the temperature and oily environment.
    So far I'm very happy with them (I've done three cars: one '84 and two '93s).

    I've done both. A couple of the originals on the alternator went south last year and NAPA store has inexpensive replacements which were Scantech. I didn't feel bad about using them on the alternator because at least it's easy to reach... When I re-did the AC system this summer, though, I used the blue poly bushings from fcpgroton... and those were a bear to install. I ended up having to make an installation tool (bolt, thick washers, spacer) to press those guys in place.

    The harder the bushing is to reach, the smarter the investment in poly seems to be!

    A number of years ago, I tried the yellow poly bushings from FCP... I don't think they carry them any more (thank goodness!) They were so soft that the PS pump practically fell off when I started the engine for the first time.

    This time around, I used factory rubber parts, no problems so far except I had one nut on the AC bottom rear mount... a PITA to correct.

      Curious - how much did you pay for the rubber (I assume from the dealer)? I'm still a little afraid of the aftermarket rubber I've got, since I can't remember if they were Scantech, which everybody knows is a no-no for rubber.

        Sean,

        I bought them over 2 years ago from an indy shop that was more than happy to order factory parts for me (yep, Volvo stickers on the bags and all). They were somewhere between $2.50 and $3.00 a piece... but keep in mind that I had handed over $2,000.00 to them for other parts, okay, closer to $3,000.00... and I drove a hard bargain.

        As far as the rubber factory bushings go, I installed them at 236K miles, currently at 271K miles, no sag, no cracks, no problems.

        I suspect the blue poly parts from IPD will work fine and may even last longer than 236K miles as the factory original rubber parts I replaced were oil soaked to the point of crumbling.

    Hi Sean,

    Rubber again. Hmmm. I don't know. I've been using up a stock of the $1.75 bushings I bought years ago, and all I can tell you is they are better than any of the oil soaked, dead originals I pulled out. And the only way I can even say that, is I haven't had any of the typical symptoms of cockeyed pulley alignment, noisy belts, and so forth, on those I've done the replacements.

    Poly sounds cool, but with the 10, no make that 9, 240s I have to work on, I'm cheap. However, I've heard (or read) some pretty wild stories about accessory bushings turning to goo, and my recollection is some of those were about poly bushings, not the cheap ones. I'm sure you'll hear from those folks.

    Just last month I pushed out 10 old oil soaked 278K experienced accessory bushings on an '89 and squeezed in $17.50 worth of aftermarket rubber, but all the leaks that tend to wind up on these are fairly easy to fix with front seals. I suppose we'll see how they hold up, but I have a feeling it will be years down the road before I know.

      Thanks to all!

      Art, I have a few anonymous rubber bushings I bought a while back that I might use for the A/C compressor and PS pump (which are the bad ones anyway), since you have had good luck with the cheap rubber.

      To all else, I think I'll go for the poly bushings if I ever replace the others. The A/C and PS bushings don't see much oil, but I think I'd like poly on the other side of the car, where they do.

      Now that finals are over, I have time to tinker, so first I'll straighten out my brake issues, then deal with squeeling belts and crooked A/C compressor.

    I had the same belt noise when my daughter drove my 240 while in high school. Poly is always the best way to go. I purchased a full set from someone on fleabay for about $3.00 each. I only replace the one that had the alternator and the steering pump. I still have not got around to get at the others. Maybe this summer I will do the rest.

    I ordered mine from IPD. There are poly bushings and then there are poly bushings. The research that I did led me to the IPD variety. It's not that big a job to replace these bushings, but at 6 bucks and change per copy, and my car uses 10 of the buggers, you don't want to do it often.

    when in doubt, go poly. at least at places where oil can get onto the bushings. the fcp poly ones seem ok to me. held up so far.
