locked out the trunk? 200

Fellas:
When I picked up one of my 240's this Summer, the P.O only had one key for her. That wasnt much of a problem, because I didnt drive it that often, and the one key did lock the doors and work in the ignition. Somehow I am not sure yesterday the trunk would not open. Its as if a key locked the trunk seperately of the door lock system. All of the locks are going up and down when I unlock them from the drivers door, but the trunk is another story. I have had seperate keys for some of my volvos, but cant recall if the trunk was keyed different than the drivers door lock.

Typically, there is the regular key that does the doors, trunk, ignition and glovebox, and the valet key which does the doors and ignition. The trunk usually opens with the doors unless you use the regular key to lock it and take it out of the central lock system.

So, it sounds like you just have a valet key, but since you don't have the regular key to lock the trunk, I'd guess the central locks aren't working on the trunk for some reason. It happened to my car--unlocking the drivers door would open the trunk about half the time. I never tracked down the problem, so hopefully someone else can give you better advice.

You might head down to the dealer and give them your VIN and have them cut you a key--tell them you only have the valet key...

Edit: Art and I were typing at the same time. I was assuming it was a newer 240. If not, my input may be completely wrong--my experience is all 89+.

Hi there,

This is one question where the year would be helpful. In '86, the locks changed. The old ones required 2 keys. The 86+ trunk lock is part of the central locking, but there's a 'valet' key that will not fit it or the glovebox. I know on the pre-86 cars I can reach the bolts for the latch using a crazy lot of extensions with a 10mm socket through the ski passthru...

Sorry for not posting the year fellas. She is an 89. Yeah this kinda bites, because I locked 2 of my jacks in the trunk. When I depress the trunk release, it feels loke the lock was set by an actual trunk key. I hit the drivers door lock several times to see if it would catch, and you know this had to happen in the rain this am. :-(

The '89 should work off the Drivers door. If you unlock the drivers door then the trunk should open too. Sounds like you have an electrical issue at the trunk.
I just looked at my '89. Just as Art said, if you drop the little Ski door on the back seat you can get a lot of extensions and a 10mm socket on the two bolts on the bottom part of the Latch.

I know you have nothing to compare it with but if you have just the 'Valet key', it will not lock or unlock the Glove Box or the trunk. The black plastic part of the valet keys are much more rectangle shape then the rounded shape of the 'do everything' key.
