Oil Leaks and Backfires 200

So I was doing a bit of research on the flame trap on my car ('85). I'm fairly certain that this is causing oil leaks. I saw some posts that recommended removing the disc completely from the flame trap to prevent it from plugging up. However, they mentioned that the flame trap system was to prevent ignition of the crankcase gasses in the event of a backfire, but this was quickly dismissed in the post because the EFI Volvo motors aren't supposed to backfire.

I am just concerned because my car does backfire once or twice when using engine braking - there is not cat on my car (chassis is pre-75) nor center muffler - only the rear muffler is in place. Should I be concerned about removing the flame trap disc to prevent oil leaks? What could be causing my backfires? My car runs fairly normally, albiet it idles a bit high (1,100 RPM or so).

    Oil Leaks and Backfires 200

I have read that Volvo released a service bulletin instructing the removal of the flame trap. I can't verify that. I still keep mine in there anyway and make sure it is squeaky clean at all times. If your flame trap is clean, you don't have to worry about that one part causing an oil leak. Now, the breather box, hoses, etc. that's another story. The entire system has to be clean and free flowing. I'm no expert, but I have seen what a stopped up system can do and how much difference a clean system can make.

There is a difference in backfires through the exhaust and what they are talking about. The concern for a flame trap has to do with the so called backfire through the intake. It is normally mixture related, and I have never heard mine, or anyone elses Volvo do this. The backfire that you are hearing on deceleration can't get to the intake anyway. If it did produce a flame, it would be out the end of the tail pipe.
