KYB Rear Shocks for a Duett 444-544

Somebody on eBay is selling KYB shocks that suppose to fit the rear for a Duett for $25 each:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=250302525674&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWAX%3AIT&viewitem=

I contacted the seller, and they gave me a part number of 240767543. That part number doesn't match anything I can cross reference from KYB.

Anybody have a KYB part number that corresponds to this number.

Paul

    Paul,

I have no idea how applicable this is to Duetts, but I had KYBs on my PV and I took them off in favor of Monroes because they were just too harsh. I'd look for a match among American-made, or American brand made in Europe, shocks, unless I were planning on carrying a lot of weight in the back of the Duett. Too bad the ones I have left over won't fit the Duett - you could have them for free. Anyone else want them?

I'm with Bob on this too.
I like the KYB shocks on my other cars, but not the 544. It's just too stiff for my tastes.
I'd suspect that the 445/210 would behave similarly.

Are you talking about all KYB shocks for the 544s or just GAS-A-JUST (KG5552) shocks?

          Paul,
Gas-A-Just in my case. I don't know of any other KYBs that fit - doesn't mean there aren't any.

            Gas-A-Just for me too.
Although I still have them on my 544, I'm not crazy about them...just to cheap to buy others for less than a couple of hundred miles per year.

              Al,

I'm a penny pincher myself, but I succumbed to Monroe #32126 at $15.34 (last time I looked) a piece from Rock Auto. At few hundred miles per year, they should last a long time. Even at the couple of thousand per year I put on I put on them, they'll probably last my or the car's lifetime - whoever goes first. ;-)

                Hello to all,

AFAIAC, there only 3 shocks to put on a 544 or a P210, most prefered is the stock shock available right from Volvo.

For the driving enthusist, I recommend trying to find a set of Konis for your 544/444 as I have never seen them for a P210.

Or have custom built shocks made.

As to Monroes, let me tell you a quick story.

I did a restoration on a 544 over 10 years ago for a customer for his every day driver.

About a year before coming to me, he had Monroes installed somewhere else.

First, the shocks were already blown up and useless and secondly the idiot installer(not the customer himself) lost the UNAVAILABLE special spacer sleeves that are supposed to reused when changing the rear shocks.

I had to buy a whole car, mostly because the restoration needed the doors and other parts, but I also got the spacers for the rear shocks. Before I yanked the rear shocks I gave both cars a side by side bounce test where you load a corner of the suspension with your body weight,(I weigh over 200lbs) and then quickly release. The Monroes bounced like there was no tomorrow, while the ORIGINAL Volvo rear shocks on the donor car acted like they should. How do I know that these were the original shocks? THEY STILL HAD UNDERCOATING ON THEM!!

                  Eric,
I agree with you that the original Volvo shocks are the best option, and, yes, I had forgotten that the Monroes I mentioned don't come with the correct spacer sleeves and that you have to reuse the old ones. However, comparing the original Volvo shocks that were on the car (made by Monroe for Volvo in Belgium) with the Monroes made in Belgium, but without the Volvo name on them, I received from Rock Auto, they appear to be identical. I realize that appearances are deceiving and that the proof of the pudding is in the eating, and all that. So, I'm keeping a close eye on the condition of these shocks (going on two years now). So far, they have behaved very nicely, and should they fail prematurely, what the hell, 35 bucks isn't a bad price to pay for a couple of years of use plus tuition. I also realize that, if I were to order another set of these shocks from Rock Auto, they might turn out not to be identical to the ones I received before. That's the risk one runs when buying after market parts.

I like Konis and used them for decades, but unless you race or rally (the magic is in their adjustability), its pretty hard to get your money's-worth out of them with what they cost today. I bought my first set forty-eight years ago and could afford them then on a graduate student's tight budget. Now, in my fairly comfortable retirement, they are out off my financial range. BTW, I had Konis fail on me in four years, but, of course, I don't drive the way and where I used to. ;-) To be fair, other Konis have outlasted the cars I had them on.
