Rear drive flange oil seal 200 1989

Well I finally got my faulty overdrive solenoid replaced. While I was under the car I noticed my rear drive flange oil seal leaking. My question is how hard is this to replace without the flange tool mentioned in Bentley. It looks easy enough. Anybody tackle this and have any tips they would like to share. Thanks.

If you are making reference to the seal on the tail shaft of the transmission?

If so there is a goodly amount of reading in the 700/900 FAQ's at:http://www.brickboard.com/FAQ/700-900/TransmissionAuto.htm#Trans_Output_Shaft_Bushing

The 240 is the same.

If the seal is leaking is probably due to the bushing being worn and simply replacing the seal will not solve the problem. I find the toughest part of the bushing replacement is cleaning off the gasket between the tailshaft housing and the transmission body. The last two I did I simply removed it carefully and used gasket cement to between the two components before replacing it.

You have to be careful not to knock road debris onto the exposed componentry when the housing is off. A good clean up of the underbody in the immediate area pays dividends later on.

You know to change more than just the seal, you must also change the bushing behind the seal.I understand there is a tool for changing the bushing w/o removing the tail shaft housing although I cannot recommend the use of this tool,I always remove the housing and replace the gasket, the bushing, and the seal.It takes a decent skill level to change the bushing, not for the get a bigger hammer mentality.
good luck
