thoughts on new purchase? 200 1993

Hi all,
new to the brickboard and to the 200 series. I've found a wealth of information and a very helpful user community. but I just picked up this 93 245 for 2000. I'm stoked to have it and look forward to many years of use.

I just wanted to get your guys' opinion of the car and any issues that you could potentially tell from the photos.

heres a link to my photobucket album

Looks good. Scrub all interior and exterior plastic/rubber (dash, window moulding, exterior trim, bumper, etc.) with good cleaner and retreat with "303 Protectant." Google it. Better than sliced bread. Buy at least a quart. Can find at high end sports stores or marine sales/diving shops. Incredible UV protection.

Boy! The Volvo gods were smiling for on you to get that car!

It's really in great shape. You owe it to us. Those that are drooling. To keep that one in a safe somewhere.

Now, just where is your safe house, exactly?

Looks really clean - congratulations!

Since your pics didn't show any rust, the only place I would look would be under the rear bumper, where the sheet metal bends downward below the tailgate. If that's clean, you're in great shape.

A few comments...
- If you don't intend to carry stuff on the roof rack, remove the cross bars. You gain about 0.0000004% in drag reduction, but you'll notice less whistling at highway speeds. IMO it gives the car a neater look, too (did that on my white '92 245).
- Someone replaced the OEM speakers in the front doors, but did a clean job. They probably used 4" speakers since the OEM was an odd size, and few 5-1/2" speakers fit without customizing. The square grilles are from '90 and earlier. The rear speaker mounts look very classy!
- Now that the car is away from the snow belt, and assuming it's sunny where you live, clean your dashboard, use the best vinyl protectant you can find, and buy a dash mat. Sun is the enemy of the vinyl dash tops and there are few (besides mine) that live in sunny climes that don't have cracked dashes.
- That looks like the original 'donut' spare. By now, it's almost guaranteed to be useless. Find a good used steel wheel and mount an inexpensive 195/70-14 on it. A larger tire might be too big to fit in the spare well.
- I couldn't tell from the photos where the accessory gauges are mounted. They're in pods as if for A-pillar mounting, but it didn't look like that's where they were.

The car appears to have been very well taken care of, and the clean speaker and accessory gauge installations and the upper strut braces give me the sense the previous owner was an enthusiast. Maybe there are some IPD sway bars mounted underneath??? The rear bar looked stock but I couldn't tell for sure.

Now for some 16-inch alloys, fat tires and a VX cam...

195/75 14 is correct size for 245. See if that will fit first.

Are you sure about that? Both my '88 and '92 245s came with 185R14 as the OEM size. Aspect ratio is approximately 80% (i.e., 185/80-14).

Yes. 195/75 14 is closest to original OEM (185 R 14) replacement available. The 195/70 throws off speedo/odo as much as 5%, depending on manufacturer. It's unbelievable how many 245s are running around with the wrong size because even the 195/75s are getting harder to find, and tire shops sell people the 70s. People here will confirm. Can also go to a tire site online (maybe Michelin) which will have circumference info to compare to OEM.

Not only that, but even tire shops that should know better don't pay attention to load rating. The LR for the 245's OEM 185R14 is a minimum of 100, or 1764 lb. I've seen shops fit the 185/70-14 on wagons, and they typically have an LR of 87 or 88, or 1201-1235 pounds - way too little tire for the wagon as Volvo intended.

But my comment re the 195/70-14 was just for use as a spare to make sure it actually fits the storage well.

IIR, it's difficult to get the correct LR. The original was a reinforced tire and, IIRC, tires made for the VW bus would work. That was a long time ago. I'm fairly sure the 195/75 will fit since only a bit bigger. Use what's available/left over for the spare.

ya ive been keeping my eyes peeled for awhile now.

the car did spend some years on the east coast (in CA now, and will stay), does rust look like it could be an issue?
