Overdrive solenoid. 200 1989

For the last two hours I've been lying on a cold/wet garage floor trying to remove the two overdrive solenoid bolts. I've pretty much used an entire can of PB blaster and throughly cleaned the area to no avail. Does anybody have suggestions or a solution. Thanks

I suspect the issue is that you can't get to the heads of the bolts easily. Here is a reasonably easy way to gain access:

1: lay a towel between the back of the cylinder head and firewall... to prevent scratching the paint.

2: Put a floor jack under the transmission cross member in the middle to support it.

3: Remove the two bolts on the trans cross member at both ends where they mount to the floor pan.

4: Gradually let the jack down and the rear of the trans will drop, when it doesn't drop any further, you now understand the reason for step 1.

5: Remove the solenoid, replace, do what you have to.

6: Crank the floor jack back up, line up the cross member and reinstall the bolts, remove towel... done.

ps. This is a great way to gain access to the upper starter bolt should you have the need in the future!
