Center muffler 200 1989

Has anybody done away with center muffler on a 240 wagon. I live in the salt belt and exhaust systems do not last long. Any pros or cons. . Thanks.

IPD sells a sport exhaust package. Uses turbo rear muffler and larger pipes, eliminates front muffler. Provides a definite increase in power, not mileage though. It is louder,i have it on my 5 speed sedan. Not sure how it would be on a wagon. kit is 200 plus shipping whereas a stock system is about 120 from fcp groton

On my 93 244 the center muffler fell off so I took it to a muffler shop and they welded a pipe in with a nice hanger for support. It was fine not loud or anything.. once spring got here I replaced it with new...Then I picked up a wagon and the rear muffler fell off... So I had the other one sitting in the garage so I put it on the wagon which is a 5 speed it not load but I do hear it more but it does leak and I have tried to repair it I have a new system waiting to go in and it will be a lot easer then having to have a intermediate pipe made up... I order from FCP or who ever it's shipped to my house free, shows up I install it and it's done. Now if I was to go from a larger exhaust all the way from the manifold back thats a whole new story...

A few years back I had plans to take the transmission from a rusty sedan. But I had to still drive it for a few more months so when the front muffler needed to be replaced I just had a pipe put in. If your planning on driving the car for more than a little longer I'd get the muffler replaced. If I remember right it wasn't only a bit louder but more vibration was felt. I have one off a donor car ready to be put on once I get the front passenger wheel rolling safe again and the new flat rear tire but before I get the TAB replaced on the other brick, maybe.

The cat back kit is cheap enough from Volvo that it just doesn't make much financial sense to do otherwise. The Genuine Volvo kit is like $130. By the time you put together a inferior aftermarket exhaust kit together piecemeal, to get it sans front muffler, your paying more than the Volvo kit.

Getting the whole kit literally is more for less.

If you go with the Turbo muffler it does away with that front muffler, supposed to be louder at speed but also increase gas mileage.

That is per BB lore not personal experience now. Did give it a thought on Ings's exhaust replacement but went old school. I would not miss trying to get those dough nuts on that center muffler at all, may go Turbo on the next job in a few years.

Regards,

Paul

Doesn't do much. Little bit more noise. Some people claim a little bit more power, but I have my doubts. I did it to save money, and as an experiement.

Any reason you want to do this?
