Upgrade suspension - towing utility trailer 700

Hi,

I installed a hitch on my 1990 manual transmission 740. Recently towed a utility trailer. Went well.

I will be doing more of this and I would like to upgrade the suspension.

What should I do?

I am thinking of installing heavy duty rear springs and KYB KG5565 gas shock absorbers.

Is this a good idea? Are there better shocks for towing a trailer than these KYB?

What about the front suspension should I do something there also? Shocks?

And what is the lower stress bar? Should I install it?

Thanks,

Dean

I have an 89 740 and pull a utility trailer and light tent trailer. I put on the heavy duty rear springs and KYB shocks and it was a bit better but the real difference was I put in air shocks, pump them up to 65 lbs and no longer does the tail wag the dog, or ther rear sag. When I am done I lower the pressure and it still handles well, I have put an IPD sway bar on the rear too but didn't notice any difference at all.

I got some of these Monroe. I think the air shock and the heavy duty spring is a good combination.

Where did you mount the schrader air input valve for the air shocks?

Did you stick with the one valve for the two shocks or did you mount a valve for each shock?

Any problems with the tubing and the schrader valve?

I mounted the one valve in the drivers side cargo compartment, beside the antennae, I havent had any trouble but am contemplating mounting the air hoses inside rubber tubing to protect against rocks and moving the valve to under the bumper so I can access it without having to dig through all the cargo that tends to be in there when I need to pump up the shocks.

I installed a set of the IPD rears on my 245 for towing. The gas shock extras will make the car ride like a freight wagon with no load in it.

I don't have specific suggestions, but do have a further question that perhaps someone could answer.

I plan to put a hitch on my '92 740 wagon and am wondering how to tackle the lights issue. My trailer has a standard GM flat 4-pin connector that works with most domestic cars. I've searched and found that to use it with the Volvo circuit, I need an adapter that costs almost as much as a trailer hitch! Is there any information out there how to kludge this or make my own adapter for just a few dollars?

I got my hitch from http://www.hitchesforless.com

And used the Modulite Wiring Kit #118186. It has the flat connector.

Worked for me with a rented U-Haul trailer.
