Volvo wiper control arm 200 1987

It is now the rainy season here in the Philippines. There were a couple of times I used my 240 during a heavy downpour and turned on the wiper to the highest position (one step up from "off"). Wiper arms only moved halfway then stopped. I turned the wiper off and after a few minutes turned it on again, and everything was back to normal.

One time, I tried using the intermittent mode (one step down from "off") and when switched on, the wiper went on continuously, no intermittent. I turned it "off" for a while and then used it again, everything was back to normal.

What seems to be the problem? Inputs will be greatly appreciated.

the gear driven contacts within the unit are failing and/or the contacts within the stalk are failing - grab another wiper unit and compare the functionality.

Mine did this but i had another wiper unit on hand to change this.
Make damn sure the plastic plugs are clean and dirt free. The weather stripping at the rear of the engine bay doesn't effectively cover the wiper unit as a whole.

Thanks for the tips. I am quite unfamiliar with the wiper's function. Are the plastic plugs those wiring connections located on the wiper motor? With regards to the gear driven contacts, does it mean I have to pull down the stalk assembly from th steering wheel column to be able to clean the contacts?
