1989 760 with B280E cutting out 700 1989

Hi everyone, haven't used the forum for some time but had very good help last time so hoping you can help again.
My 1989 760 with B280E V6 has cut out a few times recently. The breakdown service haven't been able to start it but they identified no fuel pump and no injectors. There is a spark OK. After a while the car will start and run but is very unpredictable when it will just cut out again. We've checked the two relays under the bonnet/hood and they look fine and appear to work. We've checked the relay on the board by the footwell (Relay "B") and it also looks fine.

Anything else we can check whilst it's running OK, and what should we check the next time it cuts out?

Thanks in advance for any advice you can offer,

Owen from Scotland

The injectors get their power from the battery via the radio suppression relay.
They are known to get broken solder joints on the relay board inside. They still go click click but they act intermittently. You can take the case off, resolder the connections (you will probably see a bad connection if you look closely) and then they will work again.

With the ignition on, you should see a positive power on all the injectors.
If no power or power only sometimes, these relays are a known #1 cause. They are usually on the left wing inside the engine compartment. If you have 2 the other is probably the electric fan.

The ECU switches the ground to turn them on and off.

    good luck, slainte

    Steve

    Hello Owen,

I've not cranked my 88 B280 yet, but I believe these cars had the LH2.2 fuel system in common with the B230FT of the same vintage. Without any familiarity with the B280 system, I would tell you to first check for a Radio Suppression relay failure (no pump). It will be in the engine compartment next to the condenser fan relay. Jumper the two pins on the rounded side of the connector body. The ignition amplifier on the left front fender might be bad. My 88 865 had an intermitten shut down problem that was cured by replacing the amplifier. The fuel pump relays are controlled by the relays and the ECU, and the injectors are controlled by the ECU. Eliminate one at a time by replacing with known good parts, then replace the failed unit with a new one.

    rRegards,
