One thing about sluggish engines you will find a long list of possible causes,
Here goes the one that have caused this on my 86 245DL,
Dirty Throttle Body, pull it off, clean it well, and replace the gaskets.
Holes in the bottom of large intake hose going to the throttle body causes the AMM reading to be off and cause sluggish performance. Any leak from a connection after the AMM for that matter.
Vacuum leak, a stumbling to slight twitch idle were also symptoms. Replaced all the old lines on INGA and it was like getting a tune up. Pulled up to red light and realized how smooth that piston slapping engine was running the day after doing all that.
Speaking of tune up, time for wires and plugs? A good tune up may just be the cure. A slightly fouled plug or wire going bad can do that.
Fuel Pressure Regulator, pull off the vacuum line and take a whiff. If you detect a gas odor change it. A little over sensitive to that one due to a spectacular failure of one a few years back.
The catalytic converter may be starting to show its age and plug up. Had one that would cause idle and take off issues until warmed up. Then it ran just fine, however it got progressively worse until you died at red lights.
Some of the other things to check if all those check out are things like the fuel filter and the pick up pump in the gas tank. Per a BB suggestion jumped the pumps with the engine off and gave it a listen. You want to hear a couple of humming sounds. Inga had a noticeable whoosh or surging sound from the pick up pump. New in tank pump was the cure for that one.
Crank Position Sensor which my 86 does not have. But my Blue Oval car does and that was the cause of sluggish performance on take off and the check engine code. Have read stories of this causing intermittent problems in late model 240's.
Long list, but I would start with the Throttle Body cleaning, hose check, and inspecting vacuum lines including checking the line from the fuel pump relay.
Tell us what you find and good luck,
Paul
