Fan Motor question 200 1989

I have read and looked at the pics about lubing a fan motor, but I am not able to view the pics while looking at my fan motor, so regardless of how many times I read about it, I'm not at all sure where the holes get drilled, etc. It just seems complicated. At any rate, is the repair more difficult than just replacing the fan motor itself. Perhaps I would have an easier time just replacing it entirely - one motor out and another one in?

    I have done dozens,but none for three or four years,until today.An old friend has an '89 with the original noisy blower motor,and is in no big hurry,so I decided to do one for old times sake,and the $400 cash.

    I worked 30 minutes and rested 45,and managed to tear it down and get the new motor in the box and wire it in a not-so-long day.I will install the fans and housings and button it up tomorrow.

    Two shops locally will quote the job at six hours labor @$65-hr.

    I lubed my '78 GT long years ago. I had to pull it down just as far. I could have replaced the motor, if I had one then.

    I was able to lube it. Ran it to make sure it helped. Before I put it back together. I added little tubes running from the outside of the housing down to the bearings and the shaft. Just in case I had to do it again. So far it been good. I have lubed it once since that time.

    As far as drilling holes they would have to be big enough to see where you were putting the oil. The bearings are not very far away from the fan blades and the motor supports. I would not advise trying it blind.

    Get a motor and change it. The bearings are are sleeve type. Which is crappy, since it is such a hard place to get in and out of. I would have gladly paid Volvo $5.00 more for better bearings. Even though they would have paid only about 25% of that for them!

    Such a pain in the ??? it still bothers me after all these years. That's because I need to change out one on my '86. I can hear the others getting dry on my '84 and '91.

    Yeah its a crappy deal. About $60 and you get the privilege to buy it all over again!

    Trust me on this one, if you can pull off the oil trick and it works, (I did say IF), you will be much better off in the short term... perhaps for a year or so. Removing and replacing the fan motor is a very major surgery, if its your first time, assume 40 hours, lots of pictures, and lots of labeled bags for screws and parts.

      Fan Motor question 200 1989

      Hi Jorrell -- I've heard to expect a long weekend and 10 or more hours to complete this job, but I hadn't heard 40 hours. I have a new blower sitting in a box next to me which I was going to try to install after we move into a house next week, but the 40 hour estimate has me worried. Is that 40 hours based on really taking it slow, documenting everything, etc?

      40 hours, OMG! forget that. What the heck makes it a 40 hour job? I mean its not the heater core job? Isn't the core job the one that even the techs dread having to do?

      One thing about the "oil trick" you referreed to that puzzles me is, why oil is used at all? ... isn't grease a much better lube for bearings?
