Engine/Tranny Vibration 900 1991

Hey Guys,

My engine/tranny has developed a pretty healthy vibration, it is most noticeable at idle (~600 rpms) and at ~2000 rpms while driving. I can feel the vibration through the seat, the steering wheel, and the dash rattles. For all other rpm ranges the vibration is absent. A few things that should help the diagnosis.

*I replaced my motor and tranny mounts about 6 months ago, there was still a slight vibration after replacement of the mounts, but it is much worse now. I bought the correct hydraulic mounts from FCP Groton.
*The shift knob jolts when accelerating from a complete stop.
*Revving the motor to 2000 rpms in Neutral does not produce the same vibration as 2000 rpms in Drive
*The car is a 91 940 turbo sedan

Thanks,
Miceh

    Engine/Tranny Vibration 900 1991

i know there are 2 grades of hyd. mounts available. i suspect you bought the lesser of the 2. i worked for a guy who insisted on using those when we sold motor mts on a car. i kept fussing about the cheap crap until he let me go. heard a year or so later from another ex-tech that he finally relented due to the combacks for vibration. if that's not the case, then maybe there's an engine problem. doubt it. good luck, chuck.

    Engine/Tranny Vibration 900 1991

I had a 93-940 wagon that vibrated a lot too.

I had installed "new" hydraulic motor mounts/tranny mounts from eEuroparts.com for $37.00 each but the vibration didn't change, I decided to buy the expensive mounts at $63.00 each and they were "SO" different, like day and night, the vibration decreased like 50%, you get what you pay for, right? good hydraulic mounts would be over $60 each anywhere.

I could then grab the engine with two fingers and whigle it like it was resting on an air matress.

I also replaced the spark plugs, improved a little, the distribuitor cap, improved much more, and used expensive injector cleaner in every other tank, improved much more......

I replaced the spark plug cables, not much change.

One thing I did that improved the motor a lot was using "SeaFoam" to clean the valves and combustion chamber (be careful, see the FAQS)through the fuel pressure vacum hose, and sucking a cup of water after that through the same vacum hose (be careful, little by little)...the vibration decreased A LOT...it was unbelieveable for a 4 cylinder car.

I mean vibration is a combination of many factors, my car then was 80% better than 6 months before.

That car was 215,000 miles old......clean the air intake valve too, and the idle air valve, that valve is key in the idle control, see FAQs, that helps a lot at idle.

OF course I am assuming that your tie rods, control arms, balljoints and all rubber bushings in the front and the engine are all good, mine were destroyed and had to replace them all.
