I bought my 59 PV 30 years ago, drove it for a while and then garaged it for the next 25 years. Last spring I drug it out and needed to make a decision whether to scrap it (horror!) or try to get it running again.
One of the gumption traps had been the problem of obtaining parts, especially here in Montana where junk yard organ donors are non-existent. The arrival of the Internet changed all that and I've been able to find everything that I've wanted. I do not think that the parts are expensive, in fact, I think they are cheaper than what I pay for parts for my '83 240 at the dealer.
I rebuilt my brake system with a MC rebuild kit and rubber hoses from Swedish Treasures and new wheel cylinders all around from a regular seller on eBay. O'Reilly auto parts provided new steel lines.
I had the gas tank cleaned and lined at a radiator shop and gave it a big tune up, including SU carb rebuilds, with parts from Swedish Treasures.
I needed to replace an axle and found a good used one with new seals and bearing from Mike Dudek. Very reasonable at $180 for all including shipping.
I needed a new interior so I bought a couple books on auto upholstery and found an industrial sewing machine on craigslist fro $500. After $250 for materials I have a new interior including seats, side and door panels, kick panels, and carpet. All that's left is headliner, sun visors, and dash.
For what I had in the shed, and what I have now, it's been an inexpensive proposition.
Good luck with your project.
