544 Exterior Door Handles 444-544

Two part question;

1. Is there a source for NOS exterior door handles/trunk handles?

2. I am considering getting a couple of my old and pitted sets "rechromed", knowing full well that this will be more expensive than new handles. However in order to do this, I am going to have to remove the spring loaded "collar" that sits in the hole in the door/trunk. This "collar" appears to be held in place by a washer that is fitted over the square shaft and held in place by "notches" that are cut into the shaft with a resulting "Lip" that restricts movement of the washer down the shaft.

Does anyone know the drill for getting the washer off - and then back on again after the handles and "collars" are re-chromed?

Scandcar has door handles listed for 53.02EUR. There is no picture though and since GCP and CVI don't have it, that price might be listed in case they actually do get one someday. ;-)

That is the part number I am looking for - along with the Trunk Handle (656315) but I think the shaft on the door handle could be shortened to come up with the appropriate specification for the trunk application.

The price is outrageous, however... "Have you dealt with a Chrome Plater recently?" I think those cash rich Harley owners have spoiled the boys.

Still shopping around as this is one of my "Winter Projects" I have four complete sets and hope to get a volume discount, then peddle a couple of the extra sets to recoup some of my money.

Phil,

I wouldn't count on a discount from a plater. I had the bumpers done on my '66 Amazon and there was no discount. I cannot fault the workmanship but the cash outlay sure did hurt; with tax it was just under $900. It is expensive, But man, does it look nice compared to what was there before.

I don't know anything about the chrome platers in the Midwest. I used one here in Houston that has been a family run outfit since before I was born. They have quite a good reputation among hotrodders.

Hello,

I do not know of anyone who has NOS or reproduction door handles.

The washer that retains the bezel and spring on the handle shaft is staked in place and you can simply grind the staked lip down with a file. Save the washer with the square hole as it should be reused.

You can redo the staking with a chisel after you have the handle rechromed. The bezel is stainless steel and all you should have to do is have it polished.

If you are worried about damaging the chrome, you don't have to re-stake as you can install the bezel, spring and washer assembly by pushing in on the assembly until you can insert the cotter pin though the access hole in the side of the door.

Wonderful advise!!! I tend to overworry when it comes to repairs.

One would think that there would be at least one Volvo dealer (eccentric as opposed to just plain nuts) that has a basement full of old parts. Oh well, I am off to the basement to grind down some door handle shafts!

Thanks very, very much. I will now be able to make some plater a wealthy man!
