IPD B18-B20 conversion? 120-130 1967

Thinking about using the IPD B18 to B20 rebuild/conversion kit. What do you guys think?

I did this about 158,000 miles ago. While I was at it I had the eng. balanced. No problems at all. The shop was nervous about boring the B18 block so much but it was fine. Still going strong except the valves would be in a lot better shape with some leaded gas...Oh,well!

i bought a 75 b20 from my local u pull it junk yard $130.the rebuild cost b20 to b18 are identical. the advantage better head bigger ports and valves more displacement alt boss cast in head and easy conversion to efi with injector mounts machined in head for future project.you car rebuild a b20 with future plans in the intake and exhaust.

Although probably hundreds of these conversions have been done,
there are a certain number of them that are unsuccessful because they end up with cylinder walls that are too thin. The problem is that all of the blocks are not the same due to differences in the castings. I have blocks that illustrate the problem. So the safer route is to use a B20 block.

So do you guys know any place that sells rebuild kits for the B18?

I don't remember there being anything special in a "kit" for a B18 vs. early B20. Engine block-wise they are virtually identical excepting the cylinder bore and pistons. The heads are different.

If you can just re-ring your B18, you may be able to purchase the rings directly from Deves. I did that years ago for my B16 that was already overbored 0.060". If you have to bore out the engine, you will have to find new (or used) pistons. I have a couple of used B18 sets. Can give you the details if you want. Neither will get you to 2 litres though if that is what you're looking for.

I have a 67 B18 that i rebuilt this year. I bought new .020" oversized pistons and rings from Auto Parts Warehouse for $220.00, and i shopped around for the rest of the parts. My cam was worn out and my crank needed to be turned as well. All in all it was around $750.00 to get all the parts and machining. It runs great, but then, who wouldn't like more horsepower?

Well if you are going to bore and engine out to try for horsepower, just get a B20 and bore it out to .030 or .040 over.

If you just want a fresh engine, then just get what ever oversized pistons you need for your b18....
