in-tank pump removal 200 1986

Everything I've read so far says that to remove the in-tank pump assembly (from a sedan) you wiggle and angle it out of the tank hole. I spent awhile trying this and counldn't find a way without dropping the float in the tank - does anyone have any special tricks/tips?

Thanks!

If I remember correctly, I had to rotate the assembly a bit, even at that I think I had to let the Float Rod 'Spring' a little as it exited the tank.

When it does suddeny come, and you will hit on the trick eventually, remember the position for when you come to put it back in. All I can remember is that it is counter-intuitive, and seems even more impossible than getting it out.

There's no doubt, you have to "abuse" the unit for removal and installation. You can apply gentle pressure to the rod/float to squeeze them through the opening. There's a baffle that sits in the tank bottom that surrounds the area of the float-so it only works one way. If I remeber correctly you have to turn the works about 90 degrees from it's normal position--and as you withdraw it it tilts to the rear. Use a tool or your fingers to guide the filter out, lest it fall off-it's only a slip fit on the pump. Have fun.
