AQ130 Penta motor in a 122?? 120-130

In an ongoing effort to help a friend with a tired B18 motor I've looking for a replacement. I may have found him one - a short block.

I searched the archives and found sdewolfe's post:

AQ130A: Used with the 100 and 250 series drive, ran 9.5:1 compression ratio and used Stromberg carbs. Rated at 130 hp.

AQ130B: Same as above but ran 8.4:1 compression ratio. Rated at 115 hp.

AQ130C: Used with the 250 and 270 series drive, ran 9.5:1 compression ratio and used Solex 44PA1 carbs. Rated at 130 hp.

AQ130D: Used with the 280 series drive, ran 9.0:1 compression ratio and used Solex 44PA2 carbs. Rated at 130 hp.

So, what are the reasons not to use a Penta engine in a road car?
Change the cam; maybe change the front cover; find a head
Are there any "block specific" differences that make this a fools errand?

thanks

None. You may not need to even change the cam, just put some SU's on it & a way you go.

    Howdy,

I am surprised that no one else answered this before I stumbled across it.

The AQ 130 block should be a direct replacement. Beware saltwater damage. Even if the engine came from a freshwater vessel, boats tend to sit untended for long periods of time. Check it over for corrosion damage thoroughly.

I think you hit it with the "change the cam".

Those engines are designed to rev all day long at 5000rpm so the cams in them are somewhat one dimensional. A different cam and, as you mentioned, swapping out some marine-specific parts and you should have a drop in B20. Shannon, being one of the wise old sages here, has some good suggestions regarding corrosion. I know it's particularly an issue in the aluminum heads on the B23/230 derivative engines but may well be on a cast iron B20 derivative as well...
