Adding a/c to a non-a/c car 200 1986

I found a nice '83 240 that was not equipped with a/c since new. What would be involved in installing a complete system to one that is a virgin. I would be looking at the 134a system. Thanks for your advice.

Plan on a week of work under the hood, then remove the entire dash and replace the center climate control system (that the car was built around) so you can replace the entire assembly with one that has an evap coil.

At best, this would be a "level 10" job, only recommended for experts and folks that have way too much time on their hands!

Yes, it can be done but I suspect you will find the price to be excessive based on invested time and money.

You would be better off finding a new to you 240 that has AC.

if the 83 was sold in new in north america, it will accept a/c without the dash work you mention. the 240 a/cs were dealer installed for years. we also bought cars from canada in the 80's and added a/c before we sold them at the dealer. not quite as bad as you make it sound. and so it goes, chuck.

open the hood on the 86 and you will see everything you need to put ac on the 83. and you will need 85-up parts because you don't want to run the york compressor that the 84-down cars used. so, take the 86 to the junkyard and use it for a map to get ALL the parts you'll need for the 83. that means power steering pump, hoses, tank, alt and p/s tensioners, brackets, etc., etc., etc. lotsa parts, but well worth it if you're gonna run 134. get a new compressor and drier for when you're ready to go. never know what a used compressor is going to do. flush the evaporator to get all the gunk out. good luck, chuck.

I am thinking of removing and selling the converted, working '134' A/C-system from a 1984 245 Turbo that I just bought.

Living in a mostly cold part of Canada, I don't really have a need for A/C.

You can email me at rochebleue@hotmail.com, if interested.

    Thanks.

There are some available from Vintage Air that probably would work easier than trying to install one from a parts car. You will need to get the compressor bracket from a volvo though. Vintage Air normally uses the Sanden brand of compressor, and they only offer the R-134A system. You are going to want an auxiliary fan in front of the condensor.
