in tank pump question???? any help 200 1984

the main fuel pump is getting air locked most of the time(engine runs rough, stalls, low idle, idling problem, noisy main pump). changed the level sender unit, but before putting it in, ran the in-tank pump in water and noticed that water was coming out of one of the connection terminals. is this normal or is the pump pouched???????

Thanks

in tank pump question???? changeit 200 1984

Frugal as I am: I agree with Ken C that it's worth replacing the in-tank pump. I keep a fewnew ones around and just do it every time I get the sender out (which is the bulk of the work).

I don't think it's any easier on a wagon though - and I don't think access is difficult in either case.

Make sure you check / change the filter too.

This is a good one for matter of opinion, I personally like to use everything until it is completely dead. Since it is relatively easy to change out I would put a new interconnect hose on it and run it till it dies.

At this point, why not start fresh .... 200 1984

IMHO, the price of a new transfer pump (a.k.a., in-tank or prepump) is so cheap compared to the work involved (which you've aleady halfway done) that you should go ahead and replace it, along with the little hose (2 inch?), clamps for it, and a new sock (strainer). I wouldn't do this job* without swapping out everything for fresh parts!

    * especially in a sedan, it's a back-breaker getting in and working in the trunk! Of course, if you have a wagon, it's a breeze :-) after you pull out the rear seat.
