262 Bertone Speedo in an '80 245? 200 1980

Okay, so I got the tach from a 262C to modify and use in a 1980 240 wagon, but I had to buy the entire gauge cluster...and the speedo goes up to 130 "M.P.H." - I originally thought it must be K.P.H., since that would be close to the 85 M.P.H. that mine goes up to. Would this speedo work in a '80 245? Accurately?

That cluster is from a car with a 3.54 rear while your car has a 3.91 -- it will have an error factor--and that is 130mph not kilometers. I played around with different clusters when I installed an aluminum Oldsmobile V8 into a 265. You'll see a little ratio number on the face of the speedo. I got wildly different readings from various model speedos-from way slow to way fast--finally settled on a 130mph model that read 10% fast. BTW--I spent all my HS years being called Zippy and Zipgun--a play on my last name.

3.54 rear what? Dumb it down a notch.

This is the rear axle ratio. It expresses the number of driveshaft revolutions per one revolution of the rear axle and, hence, wheel/tire.

The Beretone with automatic had a 3:54:1 ratio. For the manual trans it was 3.73:1. Your car, as already mentioned should be 3.91:1 if still original.

The difference in speedometers that Heck alludes to is actually between wagons and sedans, wagons having larger diameter tires as originally equipped.

The speedometer cable is driven by a gear at the transmisson or OD output shaft. A different number of teeth on this gear was used for the various rear axle ratios, not different speedometers.

Anyway, you want to use a sedan/coupe speedometer in a wagon. So there will be some error. You could compensate by using sedan stock size tires, which seems impractical. If there's nothing wrong with your original speedometer, why not just continue to use it?

You will have a large speedometer error and the tachometer is for a 6 cylinder so it will be incorrect also. Dan

Zippy stated he was going to modify the tach, which has been discussed on this forum and is apparently possible.
