780 front speaker cut out 700

Hey all!

I'm reworking the sound system in my 1991 780 and here is the situation:

Kenwood head unit (KRC-X858)
Polk 5 1/4 component system in the front Infinity Kappa series 6x9 three way in rear
Factory amplifiers (HD3141 in front; HD5161 in rear)

Here is the issue: when I crank it up, at a certain decibel lever, the front speakers cut out. I talked to Crutchfield and they said the front amp is underpowered.

Can anyone here either confirm or refute this? Do you have other ideas?

Thanks in advance!
Patrick

Hey Patrick,

I think the guy at Crutchfield is right. You may need to get a better amp for the front speakers. That may be a protection circuit activating at high levels. You are usually better off with a more powerful amp than a smaller one, since the artifacts created when a low powered amp clips (distorts) is more harmful to speakers than a clean undistorted signal from a more powerful amplifier. You could probably get something that meets your needs for less than $150. I would say a stereo amp in the 50 to 70 watt range (per channel) would serve you well.

Front amp is 40 watts rear is 60 or 80 can't remember exactly but it is high amps than front. I have had a lot of trouble with bot front and rear amps failing, and at other times doing weird things such as powering up wile ignition is off and powering down when car is on! I'm sure the Crutchfield guy was right.

good luck.
