Help. No Spark. Not bad fuel pump. Car won't start. 700 1988

Okay I have no spark form the primary ignition coil wire when I ground it. Both EM1 and EM2 on my fuel pump relay work when the engine is cranking so this leads me to belive that the Hall sensor is sending the right signal to the Fuel pump Relay and so the Hall sensor should be good right?? However I am not getting any spark from the Coil. What could be causing this? I swapped in a different coil from a '89 240 and still no spark.

Any help is greatly appreciated as this is our main family car, and it is just sitting in the driveway more like a rock than a brick.

I love the FAQ's, yet until someone in my other post told me that I would not hear the fuel pump run when I turned the key to the on position, I thought my fuel pump was bad because on all my 240's I would hear the pump run briefly when the key was turned on. The FAQ's also state that you will hear it for approx 1.5 sec when key turned on but this is not the case! I can hear it run when I take the relay apart and close both contacts.

Help. No Spark. Not bad fuel pump. Car won't start. 700 1988

Sorry, everyone I am trying to cross-link this post with my other post as my other one is no longer valid as it is not a bad fuel pump. Can't figure out how to delete this one etc.

Bruce Young wrote that it is most likely a bad Ignition Amplifier. AKA power stage.

Didn't you mention that you had an 89 240 available as a parts swap car? The power stage in that car is the same as in your 88 740. Before you plunk down 80 bucks on a new part, you could confirm that it's failed by swapping.

      Ignition amplifier 700 1988

      Hey Kpwall,

I agree with Lucid. Go over to FCP Groton (www.fcpgroton.com) and order the Bosch ignition amp there. You may be able to get fast shipping and still spend less. Its a Bosch, which are better than aftermarket for this part. It is also quite a bit less money. Make sure its mounted down firmly with thermal compound. Clean the surface on the car of the old compound before applying the new stuff.

      Regards, Jon
