Loose Steering Wheel 120-130

Lately I have noticed the steering wheel rocks back and forth about a 1/2" when I grab the wheel and push or pull it. What do I need to do to remove the slop?

There are two bolts under the steering wheel in the bottom of the dash (on the lip), they secure the steering shaft. They may be loose. It could be a warn steering coupler (connects the wheel to the steering box) if it's shot, replace it with a urethane coupler from IPD.

Be sure the slop is in the wheel and not your steering box or connecting disc.

Best Case: probably tightening the securing-nut under the horn ring.

Worse case: remove and check the splines on the shaft and the wheel. you might need a new wheel or a new steering shaft... Both are pretty easy to replace...

"Best Case: probably tightening the securing-nut under the horn ring."

There should be a tab washer to lock the nut. Sometimes not replaced after the tab breaks off. Result, possible loose nut. Sometimes the wheel can jam on the spline before it's pushed fully home. It can then become loose when it settles down.

That's the cheap fix so I hope that's all it is!

        Derek,

Looks like I'll repair this on the cheap as the nut under the horn ring was very loose. I am not that familiar with tab washers, I see one tab bent over, but it looks like some other tabs are broken off. Interestingly, it looks as though someone had used a punch to tighten the nut once before since there are punch marks all around the nut surface. I just used some channel locks to do the job.

        Thanks,

        B

Hopefully you have a usable tab left to use. Tighten up with a suitable socket and bar. Torque it about the same as a spark plug, 25ft/lbs, and bend up the tab flush against a flat on the nut. I don't really see why there should be any punch marks on the nut unless a punch was used to loosen off the nut. Unless you have a socket amd maybe a short extension the nut is a bit difficult to get to. If the tab washer is no good, try and get another, or you will have the same problem later.

When I took my steering wheel apart I discovered there ws no nut at all. I was able to find one, glad I found when I did.
