distributor/timing 88-240-47 200

I'm going along through this sedan, thought I'd check the timing, never been done, and I've found many wierd things POs/mechanics have done.

Timing showed about 8 degrees BTDC, which, after I thought about it, was where a mechanic would set it in relation to the 10 degree mark if he thought the engine was going backwards?

So, I losened the set screw, and, the distributor would not budge. Soaked it in PB blaster, nothing. Should I just soak and leave it sit over night? Do these things, if not touched for awhile, sieze? I've never had this happen to any other Volvo I've owned.

As suggested by RStarkie, use something like slip joint pliers to grip the distributor lower down and turn to crack it loose.

But check to see if timing is still adjustable at the distributor. My impression is that later models have their timing set by the computer. (I"m not sure as I have an old converted points system)

There is a lot of gunk that builds on the them.

You are doing the right thing by soaking it with penetrant. A very large pair of adjustable pliers would be helpful as well, I don't think it would be a good idea to try to break it loose by hand on the top end.
