We Can't Find the "Ash Tray Clock' 120-130

Fredrik and I have been trying to find a posting of a few months ago that showed photos of a clock mounted in the dash of an Amazon where the ash try normally is. It looked real nice, but none of our search attempts have been able to find the posting.

We're hoping some one out there is better at finding old posting than we are. Thanks for your help.

    You mean this photo? 120-130

    Thanks for the shout-out Chris!

    Here is the thread http://www.brickboard.com/RWD/volvo/1274191/120-130/best_constant_power_source_hooking_clock.html

This is the photo you are probably talking about.

And here it is w/o the bezel (less-nice).

Making the bezel fit is tricky and I did not do it quite right. I'm going to make another attempt as soon as I pick up another spare clock or two.

I think you can find that style of clock from any 1975-1980 240. I opened the housing and flipped the inside to make the angle of the clock change from slopping down \ to sloping up /. The made it easier to put into the dash and be seen by the driver.

Although you have to enlarge the ash-tray hole, you can still cover it fairly well with an original ashtray (good to have a spare) so you can "restore" it if needed.

My bezel is held on with clear silicone. I'd like to work out something more permanent the next time I try this (for my wagon or for the cabriolet-thing I have).

      Hi Jack,

Great stuff. That's it. Thanks. I'll post photos when I get it mounted. I'm now thinking about a thin wooden plate behind the clock to "cover" the extra big ash tray hole.

      Go Cardinals!!!

We Can't Find the "Ash Tray Clock' 120-130

    Jerry et al-

I don't know that I have ever seen a true installation of the early clock in an early car... I have photos of the clock (either the one you now own or another one that passed thought my possesion shortly after the one you have) and you can find a drawing in the early parts manual of how it went in there. I think that GCP.SE has that early 122 parts manual on-line. If not I have a copy and can scan in that page.

The only thing I can think of in the last few months on this board (but I don't think it was here) was that Repairman Jack (Nathan) adapted a early 240 clock for a 122. He and I were talking about it and it may have been off list... It looked much like the early 122 clock and he did a good job of it. He can be reached at: repairmanjack@sbcglobal.net

      Chris,

Here's a picture of the dashpad of a 1957 Volvo Amazon. It's actually an official Volvo picture.

Thanks for that link... But now I have more questions.... It looks like there is the ashtray (left most) a radio delete plate and then the clock (right most). I thought that clock fit in place of the ashtray....

Any light you can shed on this?

        Chris

If you go to the Amazon gallery for year 1958 and check the pics of ch# 10298 you'll see a much better view.
On the very early LHD cars the heater controls were on the left of the wheel. That gave more room for a clock. At this point they might have been standard. When the heater controls were moved to the centre, probably to make it a bit simpler for RHD/LHD, I think the clock was deleted. 1959 models came to the UK late in 1958 as RHD. Just about enough room to fit the clock at the far end of the dash but not easy for the driver to see. In 1965 they added the grab handle which took up that space.

You may also want to check the list of differences between the 14 model years of the Volvo Amazon; also at http://www.volvoamazonpictures.se. The 6V clock was standard the first year and later (1958) became option.

            Brgds,
