Passenger side carpet slightly wet with gas odor - What is it? 200 1990

Anyone ever experience this?

I suspect a cracked fuel return line, but how does the fuel or dampness get in the car?

Could it be something else?

Thanks for any help!

Hi Jim-
This is a shot in the dark...won't explain the wetness, but may help with the odor. I was smelling strong fuel odors inside the car for a month or so, after filling up. Couldn't figure it out. Just happened to remove the right-rear cargo panel, opposite the spare tire, to replace a rear bulb, and saw that the fuel-fill overflow line had disconnected from the drip basin under the gas cap. So, any spilled fuel was dripping into the cargo area. Don't know if it will help, but maybe??

Passenger side carpet slightly wet with gas odor - Where might the gas be coming from? 200 1990

Good thought, Russ. I'll check it out.

I have smelled fuel in the trunk too. So that is a good possibility. I wonder if fuel could find it's way from the trunk into the passenger side carpet??

Thanks,

Jim

a hole in the floor?

I found a small hole in my car once while replacing the carpet that I never thought would be there.

Yeah, it could be a hole in the floor I haven't seen. The car is almost 19 years old, after all!

The real issue is where should I look for a gas leak? I haven't had a chance to jack the car up and search for it yet.

Thanks to all,

Jim

The fuel lines run under the driver's side floorpan. I can't imagine how fuel could get into the pass-side carpet.

Pretty straight forward:

The tach is similar to the ambient temp gauge, just put the red/white wire (already living in the dash) in place of the temp sender.

Have fun!
