stuck brake caliper 140-160

Hello all, The pistons in both rear calipers are stuck. I did my research in the brickboard archives. I soaked them in PB Blaster and removed the snap rings. The seals fell apart. I used compressed air but they did not budge. What else can I do short of explosives? When I do get them out, will I be able to reuse them? The car has sat for ten plus years. Thanks.

You have an '88 240. Are the rear calipers the same as your 142? If so, pull a pair off a 240 at a PickNPull.

A brake system puts up several hundred psi, maybe a thousand, so compressed
air (which stores energy) is a dangerous and ineffective way to get them out if
they are stuck. You might "bench bleed" them with some kind of penetrating oil
or even kerosene and then hook them back up and use the brake system to push
them out. Or a porta-power pump would do a great job. Hydraulic jack oil has
good penetrating qualities also. Put a spacer between the pistons because once
one comes completely out you lose all the pressure, so you want to push them all
MOST of the way out before any come ALL the way out. And if you can push them in
and then pressure them out several times, you might even restore workability.
They are amazingly tolerant of maltreatment!

Progress report: I installed the calipers and they finally got them to move. They came close to the rotor but not all the way out. Even if I can save them, I would have been better off replacing them. However you get to the point where you don't want throw away all the time you have invested.

I have raised the white flag over my calipers. After more soaking they would not compress nor would they expand any further. I tried the grease gun. There was lots of pressure but no movement. I have already ordered a loaded replacement pair. If anyone is in need of seals, pads and hardware for Girling calipers, contact me through email. Thanks for your help.

While air pressure will most often get caliper pistons out (watch where you keep your fingers--don't ask how I know this) it can come out like rocket--for the really stubborn pistons try installing a grease fitting and use a grease gun--there's a lot more pressure there than you would imagine.
