Upholstery Staples 120-130

HELP...I'm trying to get my new upholstery on the rear panels of my car while things are all apart. Does anyone have any tricks for the super thin staples that Volvo used? They have a 1/8" leg and I can't manage to cut down 1/4" staples without them falling apart (they don't go into my stapler as singles...it bottom loads).

Are there any tricks? I'm going to look for some 5/32" staples tomorrow...but I doubt I'll find any.

Craig

I just put new upholstery on my 120 2 door rear side panels. I couldnt figure out the staple thing. Took them to my Great Upholstery guy in Red Bank. He used a short staple on some parts but most of the job was donw with glue.No penetration on any of the staples,The glue seems rock hard. Time will tell.
    Good luck.
    John.

I've had trouble with the treated board that Volvo used, sometimes glue doesn't stick to it very well. I'll give this a try if George's staple cutting trick doesn't work for me.

I went to Lowe's and bought 1/8" masonite and rebuilt several from scratch.
It is MUCH sturdier than the soft OEM stuff.

I used the official "George Downs Staple Trimming Method" and can tell you that it worked great. Thanks to George. The panels are respectable, but not as tight as the originals. I had trouble getting all the wrinkles out of the top of the panel (they were as tight as I could stretch them by hand). I was thinking about breaking out the heat gun and forming the material, but sense got the better of me and I put the heat gun away. I think they will tighten up overtime and I don't ride in the back, and no one will know as they both look the same. That should be justification enough.

          Thanks again George.

Thank goodness the front panels come with new masonite. Now if I could only get the handles to cooperate. I like the c-clip idea, but they are no fun to remove or install.

My wife was relieved to hear you put the heat gun away.
(Mine would have burned a hole in it!)
I found that a screwdriver 1mm (0.040") wide fits into the slot in the doorhandle
and will flip the C-ring where you'll never find it. Fortunately they are standard items!

I had some success cutting down longer ones. I made a piece of square aluminum
that just fit inside the bar of staples and then clamped it by the back with
another flat piece of metal. Then I carefully cut the legs on one side with an
abrasive cutoff wheel in a dremel grinder, turned it over and cut the other legs
off. I did some too short and they didn't hold.

i had a similar problem recently. i removed the vinyl from the door panels to replace the cardboard behind it.the 4x4 sheets i bought from the apolstery supply were cheap just cut using the old as a template.i cut 1 inch strips of felt material and put it between the vinyl and the board to prevent the staples from protruding.heavy fabric or vinyl would have worked also.
