Tasca over axle exhaust system 200

My sister needs a new exhaust for here 240. I noticed that Tasca is selling an over the axle exhaust system on EBAY for 135 plus shipping.

I've been changing exhaust systems on my 240's for 20 years and have yet to put in an over the axle one. What's the benefit of over the axle vs. under the axle?

Six of one, half a dozen of the other... price is nice though! Any idea how their shipping is?

I agree that the over axle is nice for rear end work, though the under axle is nice when it's time to hack apart the system after it's rotted out and fused together. :-)

    Turbo exhaust 200

Does anyone know if the turbo exhaust kit has gone to over-axle too?

my 76 had over the axle. my 78 and laters are under. the rear sway bars are different between the 2. i've not been under a 90-93 240 in a looong time, so i can't say the over axle is being used again. good luck, chuck.

My '93 still has the original exhaust (crumbling) and it is an under-axle type. But I looked up under there yesterday and there is PLENTY of room to route the exhaust up over the axle.

Only things is...I wanted to replace my n/a exhaust with turbo pipes from the cat-back when it goes (hopefully let my A cam breathe out better). Now, I'm not so sure, because I really do like the idea of an over-axle design.

Years ago I found a 242 B23FT in a junk yard. Bought the entire cat-back exhaust system. Had to get a friend's van to haul it home as it was welded into one long piece beginning at the exhaust manifold.

It's now on my 1986 244 B230F. Took an adapter, after the cat, to go from the stock 2-inch system to the 2-1/4 inch turbo system. Had to cut off some of the front length of the turbo system, but it fits fine without the front muffler.

Sounds a tad rough at idle and low speeds, but above 1500 rpm it hums nicely.

So why not start checking for a turbo 2-1/4 inch system for your "A" cam?

Ought to allow better breathing but not be such a large change as to interfere with exhaust resonance scavenging.

        Good Luck,

        Bob

OH BTW - it is an under-axle system. I understand that Volvo changed back to over-axle with later models so as to (1) avoid scrunching the pipe on big bumps and/or potholes, and (2) ensure that a DIY type could not just swap in an entire system - the way I do off a parts car.

Do you by any chance have a pic of your car from the side? Curiuos about your HD Springs in front / wagon springs in the rear setup.

I am trying to figure out what springs to put to make my 87 sedan a better tow vehicle. This weekend will be the first test with the original springs - 200 miles each way with 800 lbs in tow. Don't want to sacrifice the ride too much though.

        Sorry for the off topic.

        Thanks!

I don't have a side shot from after the swap yet, I'll try to take one soon.

The wagon springs ride great on a sedan. I think I calculated the difference to be about 20-25% stiffer. Since I changed the front springs too, the whole car lifted about an inch. I swapped the rear springs first and actually preferred the stance of the car without the stiffer front springs - the car was more agressive looking, like an old muscle car.

I see no downside to putting wagon springs on a sedan. It does ride better with some extra weight in the trunk and a full tank of gas though - towing should be a lot better.

That was the OE style back in the mid-70's and for some reason they went back to it recently with the 240. That's what the 940 has too, at least since 2003 when I got mine. My guess is that the 7/9 cars were always that way, but most of my time has been with 240's, so I can't say for sure.

I was never crazy about the squashed pipe under axle type myself — it could be prone to rattles, and made the exhaust bear the axle weight when jacking up the body.

OOOH...I've always wanted to try the over-axle.

For one, I wouldn't have had to remove the hangers and let my exhaust hang loose to change my rear TABs recently. Also seems to have no crush section restricting flow. Hmm...
