Back in the Fold 200

After four years of being 240-less (but enjoying an 850), I'm back to being a 240 owner. I acquired a '86 244 from family friends who were leaving the country. Price was $0, but I paid for a rental car from PA to JFK airport to make the deal feasible logistically. Looks like it will make a nice addition to the fleet.

The car spent it's life on the west coast, avoiding any rust/rot. It has been repainted in it's original white, rather slopilly masked, but the panels are smooth. Hood is creased in the font, some trim is missing/loose so it's not a beauty queen. Tan cloth interior is dirty and ratty. Center console is broken, door pockets are missing, and the radio doesn't work. Has nice fitted carpet floor mats and dash mat though.

Mechanically the car is solid. I was expecting a project, but it doesn't look like it will take much work right away. I have service records showing a bunch of work done, including an engine wiring harness. Engine is not oily, no play in the H2O pump, has a Mann oil filter... Exhaust is good and it has exhibited no odd suspension noises.

I'll be doing a timing belt and tune up soon as I have no records on them. The overdrive starts working only after ~40 minutes of driving so that will need attention soon. Switch and relay checks out, so it looks like I'll be crawling under it soon. Also, the wiper motor is slow and makes too much noise.

The blower motor works in all four positions but is noisy at slower speeds. I've read a lot of talk about lubricating the bearings, but is it really worth the trouble to put oil on sintered Oilite bearings? What's the consensus these days?

I put a picture up on the Gallery, perhaps this link will work... There's also a picture of it in the "Stand By Your Volvo" gallery.

Nice Catch.
I'd be replacing the blower rather than lubing it. Just my choice. I think if you plan to use the blower it will only get noisey again. Understanding that replacing it right can be a bit tedious but if you have the time and patience....hey you can fix the radio at the same time :-)
