1976 245 B21F engine swap to B230ft

Anyone out there done this?

I have a line on a virtually rust-free 76 245. The engine runs, but obviously has some vacuum leaks and other issues. M46 trans. My inclination is to do a swap (after getting the brakes and suspension sorted of course). Most of the turbo activity seems to be adding one to a B23F or B230F. Obviously the physical fitment of components is not an issue, but my question is electronics. Can LH 2.2 or 2.4 be made to play with a 76?

Thanks to everyone!

Hiya Jon! Sounds like a fun project that will be an interesting (at least to us anyway) car in the end.

You're talking about swapping the entire engine/fuel injection system right? I wouldn't blame you. Why ditch the Bosch Mechanical FI? After 30+ years, every day it starts is automatically a good day!

I wouldn't do it without a complete donor car on hand. I recall a great many LITTLE differences between later 240s and the '76 I've had experience with. Worst case you have to hack into the ignition wiring to add a circuit or two, or fool the speedometer circuit on the donor computer? If the donor uses a flywheel sensor, you'll need the donor bellhousing, but the original M46 will fit (I like the old style OD switch).

      Will,

Thanks for responding. How are you?

Yes. Everything. I agree with you about the donor car. I think I could get away with having one old Volvo stashed in my parents barn, but two?

Yeah, the car barely starts! Although I think it would run fine with minimal effort, it has been driven very little recently.

I've thought about it some more and I'm not sure the swap makes sense. Why? Because after a lot of effort, I would get a car that does basically what my current 945T does, except without AC and 25 years worth of creature comforts and suspension "advancements".

Probably better to get it tuned up, suspension refreshed, maybe painted, etc, then start thinking about drive train swaps.

    Hi,

As long as you have the host car or two, there shouldn't be a problem.

Be certain to have all the necessary parts before you start.

    Now, my problem.

If you are not successful or decide not to do the switch,

would the O D solenoid for the M46 be available for sale?

    Thanks in advance

    and

    good luck
