Crazy drop in MPG figured out. 200 1989

Thought I would thank the very few who responded to my problem of about 300Miles per tank drop to about 150.

Seems it was a faulty brand new O2 sensor.

After I measured a fellow 245 owner's voltage and saw his fluxuate between .2 and .8 volts, and his green wire into the computer measured at .5 volts consistently, I had it confirmed.

My green wire measured .5 volts. The new O2 sensor with black lead connected to the green measured .02 volts consistently. Dead on arrival.

I really couldn't believe that a brand new sensor could be faulty. I suppose even if they test some units at the factory, they only test a batch of them.

I installed new plugs and changed my oil (which seemed to smell like fuel) and filled up a tank of 93 octane. Seem to be back to normal MPG so far. Idles nice and smooth again.

Hard to believe that faulty O2 sensor had such a dramatic negative effect. Now I know!

    hi,

i'm having a similar problem - just wondering if you got a 'check engine light' or not. i was under the impression that the o2 sensor would cause the engine light to come on and have been too lazy to actually test it.....were there any signs of trouble other than the drop in mileage/gas smell in oil?

i did a tune-up hoping that was what was needed, but mileage stayed bad & now i'm starting to dig deeper.

    thanks,
    riley

You must not be lazy...test the O2 sensor! I kept thinking I was testing it wrong. Then I tested another car. Sure enough, mine showed no voltage.

My Check Engine light bulb is out and technically it should have lit up. If you look at my original post you'll see what the symptoms were.

No. It was a brand new Delphi sensor that was the exact match to the Bosch 13034.

Phew thank goodness becuase i just soldered on the new connector and installed it this morning. I have yet to test it or drive the car. Pouring rain.

My fellow bricksters warned me to stay away from anything other than Bosch. My indy parts dealer would not sell me anything other than Bosch...for quality reasons.

On a side note, rahter than adding to the very long IPD thread about exhausts. My cat I got was a Bosal and the welds are artwork. Very nice job. No splatter. Nice clean even welds. Thanks FCP
        Fingers crossed.

Wild. I suspected that was the case. Just curious - did you ever disconnect the O2 sensor and see if it made a difference? I bet the computer's "limp home" defaults don't even run that rich; no signal might have been better for the car than a bad one.

      Scorron,
I did disconnect it and it ran in limp mode for a full tank as well. It seemed to run exactly the same with the bad sensor connected or disconnected.
My guess is that the ECU really relies on that .1 to .8 voltage to make it's adjustments.
I have a 951 ECU installed in mine. I'm not sure if that signal goes through there first or directly to the fuel injection computer. I was to the point of maybe trying to replace the FI computer too. I have a pink label- I forget the #

      Sean,

I have run our LH3.1 92 without the sensor to get from the muffler shop to home which was about 40 miles, the car ran flawlessly and mileage was near normal. Of course the CEL came on after 5 minutes but beyond that, no problem.
