Headlight surrounds - chromed or painted? 140-160 1971

I've got a 1971 164 and it needs a little body work (among other things) - most of which I can do myself but I'm curious about the headlight surrounds. When I bought the car they had been removed and were in a box in the trunk. They'd been painted the same color as the car probably about 15 years ago (not the original color). I've seen some 164s of this year with chrome headlight surrounds and others that were painted. What was the look from the factory that year? Should I just hunt ebay for a pair of chrome surrounds or strip the ones I have and get them chromed? I have no idea what something like that costs - if it would even be worth it.

    Hello,

Volvo shipped them painted, but there was a chromed version you could add on later.

Headlight surrounds - chromed or painted? 140-160 1971

Excellent! Thanks for the info. As far as painting goes - I'd heard the front of the 164 has a different type of metal than the rest of the body. On mine the former owner apparently didn't use the right primer on it so the paint eventually came right off but it's (relatively) fine on the rest of the body. There's a pic below. I think the surrounds have the same problem. In the process of taking all the old paint off them and repriming them I want to make sure I use the right kind of primer this time.

      Any ideas?

I think it's just galvanized steel... Probably would want to go with a self etching primer. I'm not sure about that though. That's what I used for aluminum panels. Check with your local auto paint store or good body shop....

That's good to know - thanks for the information. I'm going to paint the car eventually but I wanted the surrounds on and I don't mind if they're primer gray until the rest of the car is painted. I'll post what I eventually used. I wonder why the front of the car had running paint like that. It should be the same metal as the rest of the body right? It didn't make any sense to me to think that it would be made from different stuff but I could be wrong.
