low coolant sensor issue 900

Hi guys,
Does anybody know if there is a way to test the low coolant sensor? I have had some issues with coolant burping from the recovery tank...it's fixed with a new cap now, but the tank was dry for a couple days, and the light in the dash never came on. It does light up when I do the bulb check though. Can you ohm it out? Or just short the plug terminals to check the rest of the circuit? Any advice very welcome. Thanks! Dave

Remove the outlet hose and catch any coolant that runs out. The coolant reservoir should be empty, and the warning light should come on with the key in the run position.

I have a 960 coolant reservoir installed on my wife's 1986 745T. It works fine, and the lamp turns on when the coolant is low.

Recently I replaced the coolant reservoir on my 1997 965, it leaked where the small hose connects. The low coolant sender is a float thingie (technical term) that has a 2-wire harness connected to it.

Look on the fender side of the tank, you will see a connector there. On my car, the wires from that connector to the underside of the tank had no insulation - it was all rotted off. The system still worked, though. The short harness from connector to the float switch are available as a separate item.

The warning light is one that should light in Bulb Test position.

Have a look in there, maybe using a mirror and flashlight, and see how the wires look.

    Good Luck,

    Bob

      Thanks Bob!
I can't look in there very well, the dealer I got her from put a huge dose of stop leak in the system...it hid the split upper hose for a few days til I noticed it. I replaced that and now I have to get it flushed at Volvo, with a new tank and sensor...may as well do it right the first time, you know:)

In my experience with Volvo dealers one must constantly remember that (1) no customer contact with the tech, the service writer is always in between, (2) service writer may or may not know much about the cars, (3) The service writer, in some shops, gets a commission based on what he writes up, thus his incentive is counter to your best interests, (4) if you want to look at the parts removed, mark them first, (5) the tech assigned to your can is assigned by rotation, so he may never have seen a RWD Volvo, making it necessary for him to go by the book and not use much intuition.

BUT - you will get the genuine Volvo parts and the warranty, and know exactly who to "yell at" if things aren't right. You may have to ask to see that little harness if they say they replaced it.

        Good Luck,

        Bob

Hi Bob, in light of that statement, perhaps I should just get the parts I want, and take them to one of the indy shops here in town, eh? At least i don't have to worry that they'll not get it right. I think one of them offers loaner Volvos for the day while the repair is completed.
