Anyone in VA want to save this 240? 200

Guy down the street has an '84 244 DL with a manual tranny (M46, I'm guessing) for sale. Cream exterior, brown interior. 200k miles. Original owner, has saved reciepts for all recent work, still running and being used by his son.

I am willing to go do a thorough inspection and take photos for anyone who's serious about buying.

He wants $500 for it, but has said that if he can't sell it soon he'll donate it; i.e., it will be scrapped. Incidently, if he drove it to the scrap yard right now, they're paying $14/cwt so he'd actually get about $500 for it. I'd rather that not happen, especially if the body is in good shape.

I don't need another 240. Well...you can never have too many, but I don't have the room for it. Even though the manual tranny would be a great gas saver...NO! I can't buy it. No. I'm not. End of story.

Anyone else?

what a jackass
"donate" a good running car to the crusher when he ought to be asking $500-$1000 at least, if he wait he'll get what he wants out of it, saw a 1980something 244 wagon with around 200K go for almost $3G on craigslist, dunno if thats how much he got for it.

If I were you and the car really was in clean condition is buy it and sell it back for twice what you paid.

Is this car a wagon or sedan, as soon as my truck is sold I may be looking for a wagon for my wife but just a thought, i am gonna get at least the book value on my truck, around $3,000 (paid $600, put $200 in it, new brakes, used tires, plugs, wires, sensors)

If you want to confirm what tranny it has, look at the shifter. If it has an overdrive button on top of the shifter, it's an M46. If it has no button and 5 gears on the shift pattern, it's an M47. Incidentally, converting an automatic car to a manual isn't all that difficult really. If I can do it, a semi-retarded chimp should be able to as well. He might be able to understand the Haynes manual too.

Buy it Scorron, you know you want to. You can always make room for another Volvo. If the scrapyard will pay $500 for it no matter what the condition, why not at least take it for a test spin, and try it out for awhile? If you really don't like it, save the parts you want and still get your $500 from the scrapyard. The story doesn't have the end. Your willpower is weak, resistance is futile... ;) I love playing devil's advocate! But it would be a shame to see it crushed as receipt saving owners tend to take decent care of their cars.

Nope, can't do it. I just finsihed parting out a crusty 245 and sending it to the yard in pieces - can't bear to do it again!

Scorron,

Do you know if this gentleman sold the Volvo already? If he didn't, I'd be very interested in taking a hard, serious look at it. I see from a previous post that you have his contact info.

You said that it was in Lorton? I'm in Alexandria, very close to Old Town. Volvos are very popular in my home state (Vermont) and I'm well-educated in the make, already owning a '96 850 and a '99 S70. Both are great cars but don't get me started on my mother's '03 Cross Country- I avoid that car like the plague.

If you can get back to me with more details and info about the vehicle I'd greatly appreciate it- my e-mail address is jrosales@smcvt.edu. Thanks.

Where in Virginia is it? I'm in Richmond... Last thing I need is another Volvo, but I'm impulsive.

Northern VA, Lorton. Here's the owner's contact info:

$500 and I bet you could even talk him down from that. You know you want it. Come on, you could get like 35 mpg out of ths thing.

My '84 with the M46 tranny gets 34 MPG on the highway at 55 MPH, about 27 in the city. If it's tuned up, cleaned throttle body and flame trap, has no vacuum leaks and the O2 sensor is working, that thing would rival a small Toyota in fuel economy. (well, maybe not the Prius and Yaris). If it were in Ohio, I'd be very tempted...

Ugh, so tempting, soo much Volvo peer pressure...

I'll talk to my brother about it, he's been interested in them ever since I got mine and he knows I could do all the work on it for cheap (and he has more funds than I do)...

I would but then I would have to change my name to 8 Volvofamily 200

I see so many of these cars that I wish I could "save", so I have to choose carefully or my property would look like a used Volvo lot.

I don't see anything wrong with a house full of Volvos... Cats and dogs I can understand, but Volvos don't pee on couches!
