You have the correct parts. The actual flame trap is the piece with lots of little holes. The reason for service is to keep all air/vacuum passages clear so the system will work. Usually the little holes in the flame trap get clogged up, some owners just clean it up and reinstall it.
I have stopped service on my 240s since I found that using synthetic engine oil makes for no clogging, not even discoloration.
Your next step is to get a good idea of what steps you will take.
Have you a manual to check into? A Bentley? Haynes? Even a Chilton? Check in the FAQ's here, the 700/900 engines are almost exactly the same as a 240.
An important step is to keep that small hose clear. It can get clogged, but usually the brass fitting that connects in to the intake manifold gets clogged. I remove the fitting and use a 3/32" hand-held drill bit to clear it out.
The hose itself is of a material that is heat- and gasoline-resistant. For the cost of the Volvo part you can buy maybe 10 pieces of vacuum hose at AutoZone, and replace them frequently.
After the job is done, do the palm test. With the engine at idle, and preferably just after a cold start, place your palm over the open oil filler hole. You should feel a slight vacuum pull on your palm. If none, the system is clogged somewhere.
Good Luck,
Bob
