Porkface.....you were right 200

A while back I scoffed when you suggested that the reference air sample reaches the O2 sensor through the wiring. This AM when someone else stated the same I looked into the matter. Son of a gun if it isn't true for some (all?) newer sensors.

Anyway, if you see this, sorry I acted like you were crazy for making such a statement.

    Hi Don,

Reference air via wire strands applies to the Bosch Zirconia-based O2 sensors, but not the Titania-based Regina FI sensors made by NGK (and now, Denso maybe). I posted on this a few times, whenever someone recommended soldering in the Ford 3-wire sensor as a less expensive replacement for the Volvo OEM.

Guess that's why some "universal" splice-in sensors come supplied with crimp splices—which don't make the absolute seal that solder would. And I'm guessing we're talking about a minute amount of reference air vs a measurable "flow".

I've seen a few mentions of this on the net, but for future reference, do you have the address for the article that convinced you?

It was the Wikipedia article on O2 sensors,

      http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oxygen_sensor,

which states, "While most automotive sensors are submersible, zirconia-based sensors require a very small supply of reference air from the atmosphere. In theory, the sensor wire harness and connector are sealed. Air that leaches through the wire harness to the sensor is assumed to come from an open point in the harness - usually the ECU which is housed in an enclosed space like the trunk or vehicle interior."

Maybe not be the definitive source but I'll take their word on it. And yours. And Porkface's. And Uncle Olaf's.
