Sigh.
Further embarrassment from my first brake job. I stupidly assumed new caliper bolts were coming with my new rotors (they did not) and now I cannot find a local auto supply that is even capable of finding the right part. Autozone seemed stymied by what their computer was telling them (pins, not bolts), NAPA told me they could order them, did, and when I got out there this morning, it was pins again. Like, the pins that hold in the pads.
Pep Boys, no. Several dealers said they only came with new calipers. Tasca hasn't gotten back to me yet. FCP Groton told me to check with dealers.
I'm really not as stupid as this is making me seem. Can anyone help a brother out?
Where do you guys get your caliper bolts? In anticipation of one answer, I can tell you that one bolt head sheared off, so I can't re-use them-- or I at least need one. I'd like to do all of them.

"I can tell you that one bolt head sheared off, so I can't re-use them-- or I at least need one"
have you managed to remove the broken stud from the mounting bracket?
Against what the books say, I've re-used caliperbolts...just don't over tighten them...every thing has a limit.
i'm sure some will dis-agree with this, but i've done many volvo brake jobs, re-used caliper bolts...no problems, so far... ;)
any local scrap yards with any 240 should have these bolts. - bring penetrating fluid and a torch - ***practice, not breaking theses ones***
or
go to the stealership...they should have these bolts...

You can reuse them, just clean off all of the old thread-locker on them.
New bolts should be like a dollar or two at a dealership. I just bought four brandy new ones a week or two ago. Steingold or Tasca should have them pretty cheap. How I miss living in Providence...
Otherwise, if you're sourcing these from a hardware store, do remember this very important bit of info: Metric "class 8" is not equivalent to SAE "Grade 8". Metric hardware uses a different set of numbers. You need "Class 10" here in Metric. Stainless steel won't do either.
I wouldn't trust anything less for brakes.

Thanks for the information. Unfortunately, Steingold Volvo doesn't carry them (separately, without calipers) either. Said the otherwise helpful parts guy: "Not a lot of 240s out there anymore."
Huh.
I guess I'll try a hardware store.

The magic number is:
975546-3
I think Tasca wants a whopping $1.57 for these. Might as well get a couple if it saves you from scrubbing thread locker off. :-)

Thanks again, Ryan. This was indeed the part, though the head is 17 mm now.
I really appreciate the research and insight.
Now, back to the world's longest brake job! Anyone got an in with Guinness Books? I'm going for a record here.

Yep... new bolts from Volvo seem to have smaller heads on them. The new ball joint bolts I got have 10mm heads... the old ones were 12mm.
As for longest brake job: Dude, I've got you smoked! My first big brake project (all calipers, rotors, and some hard lines) on my '90 245 started in October and was done in early May.
The secrets to this success are laziness and procrastination, made easy with frosty winter days and a spare car. :-)

The info might help someone later on, in a search here.

Where did you find that bolt number, Ryan?
|
|

It's in the explod-o-gram in the VADIS, hiding in the exploded view of the front caliper.
I only knew where it was because I pawed through VADIS looking for them just a few weeks ago.

This is great. Thanks so much.
Parts desk guy at Tasca quoted me $2+ per bolt, which is the price NAPA tried to charge me for the sets of pins I already had with my brake kit... So I'm worried they maybe did the same thing. I'll call them tomorrow and see if I can get a confirmation on the number.
I sure would love to get this car back on the road this week... I need to hit the beach.

These are totally available from Volvo.... the guy was just looking in the wrong place in the parts software.
Hmmm.... if you can wait until tonight I can dig up the part number.

Do what everyone does, a dab of locktite and reuse the bolts.

|

Oh, that I could re-use them! One of them snapped off in my wrench.
Thanks, though.

I could send you a couple of used ones (I've never bought any new).
Or look locally for someone that carries metric hardware. The thread size is 12x1.75mm. Should also be Grade 8.8 or equivalent. Match to your good one for length (note the unthreaded portion too).
The head can be 19MM (3/4") hex, or like your newer ones, flanged 15mm (or is it 17mm?) All my spares at 19mm I think, which were standard till '91 or so.
Email if you want some free.

Awesome information. Thanks for this. I may be sending you an email...

You say you have one. I'd go to a local bolt supplier and match it up. Any industrial hardware supply house will be able match it. I use Brofasco in Canada.
Alternatively if you have a local scrapyard that has a brick go and get a used one from there.
lastly the dealership should stock them.
