Two aternators in a month?? 200 1990

OK here's my story. About two months ago I went to work and my battery was dead. Got new battery and a couple days later dead again. Alternator. Took the one out of my parts car and had about 14 volts at the battery when running. About two or three weeks later the same thing, another dead alternator. What are the chances of that? So I'm wondering if I just got unlucky and had two alternators go bad that close together or could it be some kind of short killing them. Any ideas? I hate to go buy a new alternator just to kill it. What should I be looking for? Thanks guys. 90 245

When the alternator is out of the car it is easy to remove the two screws that secure the regulator assembly.

The brushes wear out and account for most alternator failures. They are available after market for about $6 and basic soldering skills are all that are required to replace them. If you find one or both of the brushes are worn down so that the springs do not force them to make contact you probably found your problem.

    Check the following,

When you turn the key to position II do all the warning lights on the instrument cluster glow at you. If not you need to check two things.

The little red wire on the back of the Alternator is making good contact and is not open.

Check that the Alternator is grounded to chassis. If you measure from the body of the Alternator to the Engine Block there should be zero ohms. If that ground is missing or in bad shape, that can cause the alternator not charge the system.

Next check the condition of your cables from the battery to the starter and the starter to the alternator. There should be good solid shiny contacts on all the posts. No green up in the wire bundle going up into the connector.

Final thing to check is the ground wire from the battery to the engine block.

Try those before you pull that thing out and get it checked.

    Good Luck,

    Paul
