Volvo 240 A/C Conversion Kit / One port only? 200

In my limited knowledge of AC systems, I always assumed there are two ports in a system, one in the high side and one in the low side. In the instructions for the R134a "retrofit kit", Volvo has a new port which installs by the dryer (high side?), then states that the two ports in the compressor can be sealed as they are no longer needed. I suspect one could evacuate and charge the system through that one port with the compressor off, but it appears that all the diagnostics on an AC system are based on the system running and with connections on both high and low side. Am I missing something? By the way, I got a later R134a compressor from a later Volvo and it does not have ports in the back.

Thanks in advance to those of you sharing your knowledge

The valve you got in your "kit" is the low pressure valve, to replace the larger R12 valve. Ignore or remove the high pressure port, it is no longer needed.
You will need a new dryer/accumulator.
Charging the system requires the compressor to be running while charging.

You are correct - to a degree.

High side and low side ports are needed to check a system, but the R134a is so charge-sensitive that the high port is seldom if ever needed.

The dryer can be on the low side or the high side. On the R-12 240s it is located AFTER compressor and the condenser and thus is on the high side.

Others, either later 240's or 700/900, have the dryer located after the evaporator and BEFORE the compressor and thus is on the low side.

Work with care, keep us posted.

    Good Luck,
