auxiliary fan 200 1993

240 wagon - aux fan behind front center grill and in front of radiator.

Anyone have close up photo or diagram for positioning the fan and the 3 rubber
bushings?

Also - does this fan kick in only with air cond when engine is hot OR whenever engine is hot, w/ or w/o ac?

Bushings are shot; temporary cable ties to hold fan to frame - any easy/safe way to test whether the fan is working before I start replacing bushing mounts?

Thanks!

The auxiliary fan only works when ... 200 1993

For 1993, the auxiliary fan only works when the A/C pressure is very high -- not all the time -- even with the A/C running.

And it isn't at all influenced by coolant temperature!

However, in an article I wrote that was published in the VCOA's magazine, Rolling ("Improving the Auxiliary Radiator Fan", July/August 2007, pg 25), you can install a simple wire cable from Volvo (part of an official TSB) that costs only ~$7.00 and that will put the control of the fan under both A/C pressure and also coolant temperature. The whole job takes about 5 minutes, not counting removing and reinstalling the splash pan (unless you have long arms).

The catch is that you need to already have a Nissen 3-row (or other radiator) that has the coolant temperature thermoswitch. Otherwise, it's more involved and costly.

BTW, the TSB is 26905-2 (95-04-01) -- but you shouldn't need this -- and the cable's p/n -- which you need if you have a thermoswitch -- is 9148986-4.
And Nissen's thermoswitch (Nissen's part no. 80600) which is in their radiators closes the circuit at 92 C/198 F, and opens at 82 C/180 F.

Good luck.

Is it possible to make this Volvo cable P/N 9148986-4 to operate the AUX AC fan?
It no longer exhists from Volvo parts.

Thanks.

I don't see why not .... 200 1993

re: "...Is it possible to make this Volvo cable P/N 9148986-4 to operate the AUX AC fan?..."

I don't see why not -- it's nothing really special. It's just a bundled set of wires with 1/4" spade terminals on each wire at both ends. You'll just have to work out the logic of how to integrate the radiator's thermoswitch with the A/C line's pressoswitch, though.

Do you have the info for wiring the temp switch at radiator to the A/C pressure switch?

I could not find your article written in the Rolling Mag. So any photos would be great too if you have them.

I did discover my A/C fan is working via the jump bypass at the plug.

With all the postings on this and other aux. fan options, I can not come up with any that clearly shows the process.

Thanks for the help.

Here is a picture with some notes. 200 1993

Could not find the picture, but here is a link that will take you there:

On your car it kicks on when a switch down under the radiator on the AC coolant line gets warm enough and the compressor is on, then it kicks in the fan. There is a post to jumper the switch so when the compressor comes on the fan will also run. This helps keep it cooler at lower speeds.

Hope this helps,

Regards,

Paul
